Chapter 97 - Tarot Club 13th meeting

As usual, Audrey stood up and greeted each one of the members of the Tarot Club. Max nodded silently to her, but he had a cheeky grin on his face. Meanwhile, Audrey also had a smile on her face when greeting Mr. Death, something that was observed by Klein and Alger; who were suspicious of the reason for this. After all, Audrey was of the reader's pathway, a pathway known for hiding emotions and reading the emotions and thoughts of others.

'Sigh… this is a dangerous game I am playing. Nobody is truly your friend Klein! Especially not transmigrators. Mr. Death said it himself! Of course, why would the rule not apply to Mr. Death in turn? But… I need to use him to get answers from this Primordial Unity, or from him if he is like me and is using Unity as a disguise. It will be difficult, but it should work-'

'-must be the thoughts of Klein right now. Or at least something very close. From what I can remember, he becomes a lot more cautious and distrustful of others after being killed once in Tingen. And with each Volume of the novel, Klein only becomes smarter and sharper to the point he is able to successfully beat a centuries old monster like Amon. But that comes much later. For now, all I need to do is plan out my revenge. Of course, against who and why are unknown to me because I have locked up those memories safely in the Amalgamation of All. In case some higher beings decide I need a lobotomy,' Max grinned at his own 'smartness,' not realising it was mostly Samuel's plans, which minimum input from him.

Max watched as Alger gave his diary pages, and his mind was racing as he was cooking up another important plan of his, this one not locked away. He had been observing the pages created by each of the members, and had been memorising them since day one.

Then, Samuel and he had spent considerable brainpower trying to brute force their way into learning the language. Of course, they already had the completely translated texts from Samuel's memories, which were the freshest for the first volume.

With those, he had been able to single out repetitive characters and match them to some words in English. Of course, most of Samuel's idle time was being spent this way, since he quite literally did not have much going on, after not having access to a body himself.

Yes, Samuel and Max, as well as Unity were fused into one almost perfectly, unlike the three-in-on hotpot of a Red-Priest Angel. This meant that each other's souls considered the others' souls as part of the whole, compared to the constant struggle the poor Red Priest had to undergo.

A bit of reading chatting between Mr. Fool and Mr. Hanged Man, Klein issues his mission for assassinating the Intis Republic Ambassador who was currently in Backlund. Max knew exactly why ad couldn't help but pity Klein for his current situation.

After a while, Audrey accepted the mission, and asked for the Psychiatrist potion and ingredients in exchange, but she did not guarantee results.

Immediately after, Alger also accepted the mission.

"I too would like to accept the mission. But first, Mr. Fool, could I speak with Ms. Justice alone?"

Klein simply waved his hand and a wall of fog covered both Audrey and Max, who simply grinned at the stunned Beyonder, who had successfully kept her emotions hidden this time around.

"Ms. Justice. I would like to accept the mission from you instead of Mr. Fool. After all, I cannot bring myself to ask something as 'lowly' as money from a being like Mr. Fool." While saying this, Max made sure to glance over to Klein provocatively, before returning to the conversation.

'Just how much will you look down on me. Bah! It's true though. I'm poor…' Klein lamented but Mr. Fool remained unmoved.

"It's fine if you send others for the assassination attempt as well, but if I succeed, I would like a large sum of money. I am in need of it for business purposes. How about fifty thousand pounds. I assume you have at least that much lying around somewhere in your savings right?"

"That… that can be arranged. But…"

"Yes, I know. The assassination, rather, the potion is not worth that much. Just consider it a personal favour for me. I will ensure to return the favour, that I assure you."

"…Alright then."

"Great. I'll find you in a few hours if that is alright?"

And just like that, a stumped Klein was left in the position of Mr. Fool as he saw a deal worth tens of thousands of pounds being completed as a favour for one party…

'I will never understand the thought process of the rich…' Klein lamented once more at his own financial situation.

The rest of the meeting continued as they were supposed to. Klein began reading Alger's notes, while Max rattled his brains to come up with something interesting. But ultimately, he had yet to fully decipher Mandarin from the notes, and it would take him quite some time before he truly could do so.

Then began the free discussion and Audrey asked for information about the Dragon pathway from Derrick, who had called the Spectator Pathway the Dragon Pathway, after the mythical creature from which the pathway originated.

In exchange, he had asked for the Sun pathway's Light Supplicant potion formula. Here, Klein interfered and offered to give the formula to Audrey in exchange for more of the Roselle Page Diaries, and she gladly agreed.

Later, Alger and Max were isolated by the grey fog as Audrey wanted only herself to hear what little Sun had to say, but Max already knew what he would say. After the discussion was over, Klein sent off the Hanged Man, Ms. Justice, and Little Sun.

However, Max was not sent off just yet.

Klein was about to speak, but Max interrupted by lifting a hand to face his palm to Klien. He then willed the Grey fog to form a golden monocle and fitted it to his eye before grinning at Klein.

"Beware the monocle, Mr. Fool. 'He' will come for you…" And with that, his figure was turned into a red light and vanished from the spot. Klein did not pay much attention to the fact that Max seemed to be able to vanish from this space above the grey fog of his own volition as he had another more important clue to worry about.

'Mr. Death told me that He would come for me. He must be someone of a high sequence whose name cannot be taken. Great! Now I have another high-sequence Beyonder to worry about…' Klein lamented.
