On the scale of the 'human heart,' there never exists a true balance. No matter what is placed on either end of the scale, it will inevitably tilt to one side.
When two countries or two individuals compete in some contest, we naturally hope that the side close to us will emerge victorious. However, when both competitors are strangers to us, we will unconsciously favor one party, simply because their nose is a little higher, their attire looks better, or some other action suddenly endears us to them.
And what if both competitors are close to us? The result is the same.
In operas, there are often scenes similar to this: two young people fall in love with the same girl, but the girl's heart is full of confusion and she cannot choose. At this point, a duel becomes a good way of resolving the issue.
