Chapter 16 - Love's Intricacies

Steve had been planning this surprise for Victoria for weeks now. He knew it had to be something spectacular, something that would truly capture her heart. Late one evening, he sent her a text message, "Victoria, I've got a big surprise for you, from my heart. Are you ready for it?"

Victoria's heart raced as she read the message. She was torn between excitement and anxiety. What could this surprise be? Why was Steve being so secretive? She couldn't help but reply, "I'm intrigued, Steve, but before I say yes, can you give me a hint? I don't want any unpleasant surprises."

Steve understood her hesitation and replied, "I promise it's nothing unpleasant. In fact, it's something you've always dreamed of. Can we meet tomorrow to discuss it in person?"

Victoria thought for a moment. She was nervous about what this surprise might entail, but she trusted Steve. He had always been a kind and thoughtful friend. She decided to call him to discuss it further.

As the phone rang, Victoria's heart pounded in her chest. Steve picked up after a few rings, his voice filled with anticipation. "Hey, Victoria, I'm so excited about this surprise. It's a brand new Porsche 911, just like you've always wanted. I've already ordered it, and it'll be here soon."

Victoria was stunned. A Porsche 911? It was beyond her wildest dreams. But she also knew that such an extravagant gift came with a price, and she didn't want to owe Steve anything. "Steve, I appreciate your generosity, but this is too much. I can't accept such an expensive gift. Let's talk about it later."

Steve tried to convince her, but Victoria remained firm. She needed time to process this unexpected turn of events and figure out her feelings. Steve reluctantly agreed to wait, but he couldn't help feeling disappointed.

Victoria's mind was in turmoil. The offer of a Porsche 911 from Steve had left her conflicted. On one hand, it was an incredibly generous gesture, and she couldn't help but feel flattered that he cared for her so deeply. On the other hand, such an extravagant gift raised questions about Steve's intentions, and she didn't want to be indebted to him in any way. She tossed and turned in bed, unable to find peace in her thoughts.

After a while, Victoria decided to put aside her confusion and exhaustion. It had been a long day, and she had a busy day ahead of her tomorrow. She turned off her phone and decided to get some rest. Maybe a good night's sleep would clear her mind.

As she lay in bed, she felt herself drifting off to sleep. The weight of the day's events finally caught up with her, and her eyelids grew heavy. She was on the verge of falling into a deep slumber when her phone suddenly rang, startling her awake.

She reached for her phone and saw that it was her secretary, Ms. Emily, calling. Victoria quickly answered, concerned for her secretary's well-being.

"Hello, Emily. Is everything okay?" Victoria asked with genuine worry.

Emily's voice sounded weak and tired on the other end of the line. She explained that she wasn't feeling well and would need to seek medical attention in the morning. This would likely cause her to arrive late at work. She also requested that Victoria convey her apologies to Mr. Boss, the director manager.

Victoria sympathized with Emily and assured her that her health was the top priority. She wished her a speedy recovery and told her to take all the time she needed to get well. After the call, Victoria couldn't help but feel a sense of responsibility for her team and the challenges that lay ahead.

With her thoughts now focused on Emily's health and her duties as a manager, Victoria decided to put aside her inner turmoil for the night and try to get some much-needed rest. She turned off her phone once more and hoped that the new day would bring clarity to her complicated situation with Steve.

In the bright light of the next day, Victoria was back at her office, engrossed in her work on her laptop. The events of the previous night still lingered in her mind, and she couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. Her focus on her tasks was disrupted when her phone rang, and Steve's name appeared on the caller ID.

With a sigh, she answered the call, and Steve's cheerful voice greeted her. He asked about her well-being, inquiring about her day so far. Then, Steve proposed that he could visit her at her workplace, suggesting they could have a benchmark meeting for some project. Victoria hesitated for a moment but eventually agreed. She shared the location of her office with him.

As Victoria ended the call, her thoughts remained in turmoil. She couldn't shake the feeling of uncertainty about Steve's intentions and the surprise he had promised. Just then, her workmate, Mr. Levy, a handsome man with light skin and a friendly demeanor, approached her desk. He noticed the troubled expression on Victoria's face and asked if everything was alright.

Victoria hesitated but decided not to burden her colleague with her personal concerns. She put on a smile and assured Mr. Levy that she was okay, attributing her momentary distraction to some work-related matters. Mr. Levy accepted her response, though he couldn't help but sense that something was amiss.

As the day went on, Victoria tried to focus on her tasks, but her mind kept wandering back to Steve's impending visit. She couldn't predict what this meeting might bring, but she was determined to face it head-on and find some clarity in the midst of the intricate web of emotions that had entangled her heart.

After her lunch break, Victoria returned to her office, feeling somewhat more composed. She decided to take a moment to enjoy the view from the balcony just outside her office door. The sun was shining brightly, casting a warm glow over the courtyard below.

As she stood there, lost in thought, she was interrupted by the arrival of two familiar faces. Ryan, the gate officer responsible for screening visitors, and Caleb, the friendly office messenger, approached her. Ryan had a clipboard in his hand, and Caleb held a sealed envelope.

Ryan cleared his throat and began, "Good afternoon, Miss Victoria. We have a message for you."

Curious, Victoria turned her attention to Caleb, who handed her the sealed envelope. She quickly opened it and read the message inside. It was a notification that someone named Steve had arrived at the company's main gate and was requesting to see her.

Victoria smiled and thanked Ryan and Caleb for their prompt delivery of the message. She knew that Steve had arrived for their planned meeting. With a sense of anticipation, she instructed them to guide Steve to her office, and they nodded in acknowledgment before heading back to the gate.

Meanwhile, at the main gate, Steve had arrived with his company driver, Leonard. Steve informed Leonard that he would be heading inside and instructed him to wait in the car. With a nod, Leonard parked the car nearby and watched as Steve proceeded towards the company's entrance. The air was filled with a mix of excitement and uncertainty as Steve approached Victoria's workplace, eager to see her once again.

A soft knock on Victoria's office door interrupted her concentration. "Yes, come in," she called out as she turned her attention away from her laptop screen. The door opened, and to her surprise, Steve walked in. She couldn't help but offer a polite smile, saying, "Hello, Steve. What brings you here?"

Steve entered her office with gratitude in his eyes and said, "Thank you so much for seeing me today, Victoria." There was a brief exchange of glances, both acknowledging the complex emotions between them. Steve, still standing, hoped that Victoria would stand as well and offer him a warm hug, but she instead gestured for him to take a seat.

Victoria seemed focused on her laptop, typing away for a brief moment before she completed her task and turned her full attention to Steve. Their dialogue began, and Steve's main agenda became clear: he wanted Victoria to reconsider her relationship with Williams. Steve argued that Williams no longer suited her and that he would likely struggle due to financial constraints he faced.

Victoria was taken aback by the request, and disappointment colored her face. She knew this meeting was not what she had anticipated. She gently but firmly told Steve that this wasn't the right time to discuss such matters and requested that he leave her office. She suggested he call or text later when she was done with her work.

As Steve left, he discreetly left a letter on her desk. He insisted that Victoria read it, and she reluctantly agreed. After he departed, Victoria opened the letter, and her eyes widened in disbelief as she read the contents. It contained a shocking offer: "If you do away with Williams, a petty man, I will give you 5 million US Dollars, and you will own a bigger house in the city at my expense." In a fit of anger and frustration, Victoria tore the letter into pieces and angrily threw it into the nearby wastebasket. It was time off duty and Victoria rose on her fit ready to pack .

No sooner had Victoria left her office and headed home than her phone began to ring. She hurriedly retrieved it from her bag, her heart beating a bit faster with anticipation. She answered, her voice warmed with a smile, "Yes, dear, I've missed you."

As the conversation unfolded between her and Williams, there was a palpable tension in the air, leaving both of them hanging on the edge of their words, wondering about the situation and the timing of this call, eager to find out what happens next.
