Chapter 7 - Explaining

I almost dropped my phone. "What?" I gasped. "Why?"

"I don't know. I heard that our old house wasn't sold at all. We could meet there and see if any of his journals are still there.," Scott said.

I thought about it and looked at the time. If I started out now I could get there by tomorrow morning. "Okay, but I have to ask the Lockwood's if I could use one of their cars," I said as I was mentally thinking of what I was going to say.

"Alright. See you then."

"Bye, Scott." We hung up and I packed up my backpack. I put my phone in my purse and went downstairs with it leaving my backpack upstairs because I didn't want them to think I was running away. I found them all in the living room. They were talking about tonight's hunt. "Uh, Mr. and Mrs. Lockwood? Can I ask you something?"

They looked at me. "Of course, Sapphire," Mrs. Lockwood said.

"I just got a call from my elder brother and he'd like to meet me out our old house. May I use one of your cars to get there?"

"You have a brother?"

I nodded. "Two of them, actually. One my parents thought was dead and the other I had no clue about until today." I just wish I knew how Morgan had survived.

"Why would he want to meet you at the place where your parents died?" Lizzy asked.

I looked at her. "Why didn't you tell me a guy named Scott Hemlock was in Dark Savers?" I countered.

Everest's eyes widened. "Oh! That's why your last name sounded familiar!"

I just managed not to glare at her. "Yes. He's my elder brother and he just told me something about our father so we're going to investigate."

"Then you'll need the handgun I got you today just in case something happens," Mr. Lockwood said. "Do you know how to shoot a gun?"

"Yes, my father taught me." Even though I was only five years old.

He left the room and came back with the gun. "It's a Glock 43. I'd keep it in your purse."

I took it and put it in the purse that was hanging on my hip. "Thank you, sir."

"You're welcome." He sat back down.

"What did Scott tell you?" Mary asked.

"That you gave my number away," I said. I know I'll have to tell them the real reason but I wanted to get that one out in the open.

"We gave your number to the rest of the Dark Savers in case of an emergency. They have everyone's numbers. Mary's too." Bennet explained.

"Yes, but did you tell them not to give it away to everyone who knows my name?" I asked.

"We did."

"Okay."

"But what do you need to investigate?" Mrs. Lockwood asked.

I bit my lip. I knew they were concerned about my safety so I said, "Scott told me when he was young, he went to our father's barn. It was off-limits but he still went. He regretted it afterward. He saw monsters missing limbs and other stuff. They were all alive and he said they weren't happy." I paused. "When he told me this I thought our father was just researching them. Turns out, he had been creating them. Then he released them into the world and they reproduced. That's why there's a lot of them."

"So he created the FleshEater that killed him and your mother," Lizzy said,

I nodded. "He probably went to release it into the world and it just turned around and killed him. Then when mom went to get him, it killed her too."

"Wow," Everest said.

"We're going to see if any of our father's journals are there," I added.

"The house was probably cleaned out and sold," Mr. Lockwood said.

I shook my head. "Scott said they never sold it."

Everest chuckled. "That's probably because they saw all the creepy stuff and didn't want to touch or go near it."

I smiled. "I wouldn't want to touch or go near that stuff either."

"Yet you're going to," Mary said.

I nodded. "I want to know why he released those things into the world."

"Good reason," Everest said.

"Sapphire, will you take one of the Dark Savers with you?" Lizzy asked. "Just to be safe?"

"Scott is a Dark Saver," I pointed out.

"Yes, but only for the last six years. Bennet, Ever, Vincent, and I are the only ones who have been doing this since the beginning."

"And how long is that?"

"Twelve years."

I blinked. "You've been doing this since you were four?"

She nodded. "Bennet was six then."

"So he's eighteen now. How old are you, Mary?" I asked.

"Fifteen," she said calmly.

I stared. "You aren't even supposed to be driving!"

She smiled a little. "People are too afraid of Dad to make a complaint. Besides, I look older than I am."

I shook my head. "Lizzy, you need everyone for your hunt tonight. I'm planning to leave right after this conversation." Hopefully.

"Not all of us need to go. Please take Vincent with you," Lizzy said. "He and your brother will keep you safe."

There was a knock on the door and in came Vincent. "Speak of the devil," Everest said giggling.

He raised an eyebrow at her. "You were talking about me?"

"I want you to go with Sapphire to her old home because there could still be monsters, that her father created, living there," Lizzy explained.

"Uh, excuse me? I didn't agree to that," I said.

She looked at me. "Then you stay here."

"What!?! That's so not fair. My brother will be there! Besides, you aren't the boss of me!"

"Lizzy is right. We'd feel a lot more comfortable if Vincent went with you," Mrs. Lockwood said.

Well, I won't be comfortable since I have a crush on him! I saw Mary grinning at me. I gave her a warning look that clearly indicated if she blurted mine out, I'd blurt hers. The grin disappeared. Though I suppose it would be nice to have someone who knows monsters really well and someone to talk to on the way there. Hell, I bet he carries antivenom for the poisons too and that would be very useful. I sighed. "I suppose he can come if he wants."

Lizzy turned to Vincent. "Will you go with her and keep her safe?"

"As long as we take my truck since it has everything we need in it," He said looking at me.

"Fine by me," I grumbled. "Just let me get my backpack."

Lizzy smiled. "Thank you."

"No problem. Let me know what happens tonight at the hunt," Vincent said.

"We will."

I went to my room, grabbed my backpack, and went back to the living room. "Let's go," I said as I walked past them.

Vincent followed me and we got into his Toyota. I told him where to go and fell into an angry silence. Though I had been nice when I told him where to go.
