Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: New life

Today is probably the unluckiest day in my life.

I waited half a day until 12:00 a.m. when I received a notification from the school. I read the announcement with excitement and a little worry in my heart, then I let out a sigh of relief. I passed Hanoi-Amsterdam Gifted International Highschool for the Gifted, I thought that I had to quickly inform my parents of this good news. So, I cycled as fast as I could, weaving through the busy main road of Hanoi's Cau Giay district. However, it took me more than half an hour to get home, which is only 2 km from my middle school. I feel like the road is much quieter today. Many people probably cannot imagine the traffic jam during rush hour. It takes more than two hours to travel the same distance. When I went home, I was startled to see my apartment building on fire. The firefighters hadn't arrived yet due to traffic jams. The neighbors were calling each other to get water, sand, or anything. What can I do to put out the fire that is spreading very quickly in my family's apartment? I stood there for a long time, increasingly worried when I couldn't find my parents, my brother or my sister in the crowd gathered nearby.

About 10 minutes later, the rescue team arrived to evacuate people from there, followed by the firefighters and began entering the building to put out the fire. As for me, I tried to enter my family's apartment but was stopped by the neighbors and the fire department, they said this place was very dangerous and I was still a child. Well, this is a familiar saying of adults, sometimes they abuse it to justify why their children destroy other people's things. I stood about 10 meters away from the building at the request of the rescue team. I was extremely worried, I felt something bad was about to happen. And my hunch was right.

At 1 p.m., after more than 20 minutes, a team of firefighters came out with many injuries on their bodies, which showed that they struggled a lot to save the victims from the fire. They walked out of the building in a hurry, the rescue team also came out, they took with them the bodies of two people, those were my parents. I felt like I was collapsed for a long moment, I just wanted to cry out loud but I couldn't. I blamed for how bad Vietnam's fire prevention system was. I had heard of many big fires that killed many people and separated many families, and today, it happened to my family. I. I mustered all my courage to ask the firefighters about my sister. One of them came out, he looked at me, then he looked down, then he took my shaking hands, announcing that he couldn't find my sister's body. I fell to my knees, then stared at the burned black apartment..
