Chapter 4 - Into The Past On Wheels

The unfamiliar streets stretched endlessly before them, a labyrinth of neon signs and vintage cars. Fatigue weighed down on their weary bodies, each step a struggle, until a glimmer of salvation appeared on the horizon. It came in the form of a diner, a beacon of hope with an overpowering scent of hairspray wafting from its entrance. Inside, time seemed to warp as patrons donned gaudy '80s fashion, a vivid spectacle straight out of a retro movie. Blue eye shadow and red lipstick adorned one woman's face as if she had leaped from an '80s magazine cover. Their quartet of disheveled time travelers drew curious gazes.

"Hey, do any of you have money?" Thalia whispered anxiously. Jason produced a wallet filled with damp bills, the cashier eyeing them skeptically. With Aaliyah's persuasive charm and Leo's expertly feigned pout, they managed to convince her to accept the soggy cash. Their $40 transformed into a feast that surpassed expectations. Leo devoured his burger with gusto, ketchup smeared across his face like war paint. Jason attacked his spaghetti with such fervor that it echoed through the diner, while Aaliyah savored her very first slice of pizza. Every bite of Thalia's hamburger felt like a taste of heaven, though it didn't escape the disdainful glare of an elderly lady with comically oversized round glasses.

Following their meal, they sat in silence, enveloped by the clatter of dishes and the buzz of conversations around them. The smoke from nearby cigarettes made Aaliyah cough in discomfort. Exhaustion took over Thalia as she drifted to sleep. Two hours later, Leo's plea for bubblegum from the candy machine stirred Thalia awake. She handed him some wet quarters from her pocket and, as her energy returned, she began pressing buttons on the watch. It let out a brief beep before shutting off, sending a wave of dread washing over her. What if they were marooned here indefinitely? Leo would never see his mother again, and Jason and Aaliyah would be separated from their families. Guilt gnawed at Thalia; she had recklessly drawn them into this predicament. Powerless, their smartphones lay lifeless, and they had no means to contact home.

They all sat at a table in silence as tension cut through the air. Jason picked up a nearby newspaper, a relic from a different era, dated "New York Times, Oct 28, 1985." Leo played tag with a local girl while the sounds of "Radio Gaga" from the jukebox filled the air. Yet none of them felt inclined to join in the revelry. In her restlessness, Thalia toyed with the watch, trying different patterns.

Suddenly, a blue transparent hologram of a woman's face manifested before them, introducing herself as Ava, their personal time assistant. They all let out a gasp and stared in amazement. Her presence astounded Thalia; she hadn't anticipated such advanced technology. Thalia passed her hand through her, feeling an intriguing static sensation. Ava reverted to her original form. Could this watch belong to someone from the distant future?

"Cool, it's a hologram! It's like Star Wars," Leo beamed as he looked at Ava.

"That's amazing," Jason stared in awe.

After a moment's pause, Thalia replied, "Yes, I require your assistance. I want to return to my time."

"Unfortunately, the watch will need time to reboot before you can travel again," Ava responded, her gaze distant.

"So, we're stuck here for days? We don't even have money or a place to stay," Jason sighed as his expression changed to disappointment.

"The time watch provides a comfortable RV for its travelers. Simply request it, and I will create the RV, fully equipped inside and discreetly camouflaged on the outside. It is inside a small cube that you can carry anywhere."

"You're telling us that we will live in an RV that fits in a cube? That sounds crazy," Aaliyah said.

"It does sound pretty crazy," Leo added.

"I assure you that it is comfortable and safe for humans," Ava responded.

They left the restaurant in search of a suitable location. Ava initiated the RV's formation, and a metallic cube dropped to the ground. We started at the small cube in wonder. A bright flash appeared from the cube, and a spacious metallic RV stood before them. It glitched for a moment, revealing the appearance of a nearby trailer.

"I don't trust this weird RV. What if it shrinks with us inside, and we're tiny forever?" Aaliyah said as she hid behind Thalia.

Jason took the first step, cautiously entering the RV. Moments later, he poked his head out a window, "You guys need to see this!"

The futuristic yet modern RV they stepped into was a marvel of design, blending sleek aesthetics with practicality. It offered ample space for their group, accommodating everyone comfortably.

The exterior was a seamless fusion of clean lines and advanced materials, featuring a striking metallic finish that seemed to change colors depending on the angle and lighting. Integrated LED strips illuminated the surroundings, creating a welcoming ambiance even in the darkest of nights. Upon entering, they found themselves in a spacious, well-lit living area that seamlessly flowed into the kitchen. The interior decor was a blend of warm, natural wood finishes and metallic accents. Large, panoramic windows stretched across one side, allowing for breathtaking views of the landscapes they'd encounter on their journey. The RV boasted a state-of-the-art entertainment system, complete with a massive, wall-mounted holographic display that could be used for movies, navigation, or virtual tours of their destinations. Surround sound speakers were discreetly integrated into the walls, providing an immersive audio experience. The kitchen was a gourmet chef's dream, with modern appliances and a generously sized island that doubled as a dining table. A built-in coffee machine offered freshly brewed cups with a simple voice command. The refrigerator featured transparent LCD doors that allowed them to see its contents without opening it.

Moving toward the back of the RV, they discovered a comfortable sleeping area with a combination of private cabins and convertible sleeping spaces. The beds were outfitted with memory foam mattresses and adjustable firmness settings to cater to individual preferences. Privacy curtains and sliding partitions allowed for a balance between personal space and social interaction. The bathroom was a sleek, compact space featuring a high-tech shower with customizable water settings and a smart toilet with integrated bidet functions. A hidden washing machine and dryer added to the RV's self-sufficiency. Sustainability was a central theme, with a rooftop garden featuring solar panels and a rainwater collection system. The RV utilized advanced energy-efficient technologies and had a self-contained waste recycling system. Overall, this futuristic and modern RV offered them the perfect blend of comfort, style, and cutting-edge technology, making their journey an unforgettable adventure. As they marveled at their newfound home on wheels, the uncertainty of their predicament was replaced by excitement for the incredible journey ahead, through time and across unimaginable landscapes.
