Chereads / Null & Void: Journey to Defy the Creator / Chapter 31 - Trapped with an Infant Spirit

Chapter 31 - Trapped with an Infant Spirit

Null worked at the behest of the infant spirit and its constant bickering to create more energies.

He told himself it would be good practice for later creations— not like he was being held captive like some kind of jester amusing a king.

At first, he could not concentrate due to the annoying pestering of the gargantuan head of water, resulting in a tense khaki colored string-like energy that tore itself apart after a few moments of existing.

It was a rough period of time for Null as he worked tirelessly to gain any sort of connection with the cosmic structure.

Before he knew it, Null had created a total of five useless abilities each from a peculiar feeling attached to them.

After finishing the fifth new energy, Null smiled warily at the infant spirit that stared intensely at him.

"How about this one," Null asked nervously.

A few drops of sweat gathered on his forehead.

"It's wrong. All wrong!" The face frowned.

Without any appeasement, it threw a tantrum just like any other toddler.

Only, the infant spirit was capable of much more than crying and flailing around.

The fuming head opened its mouth wide open and erupted with a soul-shaking roar.

"I HATE YOU!"

The sound waves were laced with a dreadful power that made Null regret everything.

As soon as they descended upon his puny figure, he was met with a pain no mortal should experience.

"ARUAHHGGH!!!!!"

Null involuntarily tensed up before tipping on the ground and releasing a gut-wrenching scream that would give even adults nightmares for weeks.

After a series of inhumane howling, Null was pardoned from the torturous pain.

The merciful spirit had finally ended its excruciatingly painful tirade.

"What are you doing on the ground like that silly?"

It seemed to be amused by the pitiful state it had left Null in.

The person in question was drenched in a pool of his own sweat mixed with blood.

Some of the vessels in his body had been burst apart and he had clawed himself amidst his suffering.

Null gasped in both pain and fear of the pain returning once the spirit was triggered again.

'Note taken. Pretty colors only.'

His miserly state might have portrayed him as near dead, but the same couldn't be said for his eyes.

"Ahem...," Null got the attention of his tormentor.

"Hmm?" The face looked back towards Null.

Null raised a closed hand towards it with his head down; the dull light peeping from the cracks between his still trembling fingers brought the spirit to a gasp.

"I'm sorry for not trying harder. I'll make more pretty colors, so please don't hurt me like that again."

He opened his hand to reveal a dusky rouge energy that collapsed on itself as if trying to run from its very existence.

As it saw his hand, the infant spirit did not know how to feel about Null's humble gesture.

The enthralling sight of the fluctuating energy and the dismal figure of Null made for a poignant remark of the violent nature of its previous outburst.

"I did not mean for you to fear me. But I did not know that there could be such a pretty sight in such a bad feeling."

The spirit split off a part of its liquid form and used it to wash over Null; as it did so, Null was hit with a splash of relief as his body was cleansed from the sweat and blood.

It felt as though he had soaked in the richest natural spring for hours under the warmth of the Sun behind a few odd clouds.

His entire body relaxed as he eased onto the ground as he was taken over by a force that could only be denoted as pure ecstasy.

"More please," he asked still lying face first to the ground.

'Hehehe.'

An idea formed in the mind of the spirit at those words, "There's a lot more where that came from if you can show me some more pretty colors."

As the effects of the water wore off on his droopy body, Null spoke with his head to the side, "I can do that, but it's not like I can stay here with you forever."

"Then just come back later," the infant spirit replied.

"Aren't you going to keep me here, forced to heed your desire for my pretty abilities?" Null never realized how crazy he sounded as he spoke aloud.

"Force you? I never forced you to do anything. You were the one who made me in the first place."

"Made you?! What are you even talking about? Your creator was someone completely unrelated to me."

"If you mean my body, that might be true. But I can only remember waking up from all of the pretty yellow stuff that brought me here together in one piece."

Null felt like he was going insane the more he spoke with inanimate objects and foreign beings.

This whole conversation of spirits and souls and powers and more was still digesting in his system, but the more he witnessed and interacted with this new world, he could feel excitement within.

'I guess I somehow awoke the dormant spirit of the Soul Soothing Vase by gathering all of the water in this place.'

He recalled the clearing of the mist and how the water thinned out over the surface of the rocky floor.

"Where exactly are we?"

He did not know what answer to expect from the spirit as he thought he was in some sort of illusion when he was first brought into the boat.

"Hmm?"

The spirit looked around before settling back on Null, "Shouldn't you know since you're the one who brought me here?"

'Damn,' Null figured it wouldn't be that easy.

'I guess the vase must've been on some kind of autopilot when it pulled me in here.'

"Could you try and find a way to send me out of here? I know you can do it," Null wanted to take the chance to see if he could escape the clutches of the spirit once and for all.

"I don't know, but I'll try."

The face smiled one last time before it disappeared into a wavy distortion.

It took a short while before the water pooled down towards the ground and began swirling into the form of a gate before Null.

A portion of the gate turned into a miniature face that spoke to Null, "I think this might bring you out of here."

"Awesome! I won't forget to come back once I learn a few more things on my journey."

"Journey?"

The gate closed and reformed into a humanoid figure with no distinct features aside from the adorable face from before.

"Does that mean you're going to leave me," the spirit asked with a saddened expression.
