"I won't agree to sell the land, let alone Mia," Brittany said coldly.
"No matter what, we can't sell our house and land!"
"If you want to go to the prefecture capital, go by yourself."
Mrs. Lee's crying stopped for a moment, then she cried even harder.
"You're also heartless. Your father is missing, but you don't want to look for him, and you don't want me to go."
"How else can I have a conscience?" Brittany asked indifferently. "I exchanged myself for five ounces of silver coins to buy medicine for you. Isn't that enough?"
She stood up. "No one's stopping you from looking for my father. We are just telling you not to sell the land."
Mrs. Lee cried even louder when she heard this.
Brittany ignored her and started rummaging through the room.
After rummaging for a while, Brittany found a thick stack of books and pamphlets, as well as a white porcelain mortar.
She put the things aside and continued to search.
Finally, she found what she was looking for in the bottom drawer of the wardrobe.
It was a rosewood box.
She opened the box and saw a set of golden needles inside.
She had returned to her parents' home today for this item.
There were originally two sets of needles at home, one set of gold needles and one set of silver needles.
Both sets were passed down from their ancestors. It was said that their great-grandfather was a royal doctor.
The set of silver needles that her father had been using had disappeared along with him.
Brittany found a bundle of leather and was about to wrap the box, books, and porcelain mortar up when Mrs. Lee propped herself up on the bed and said in shock, "What are you doing? It was passed down from your father's ancestors. You can't sell it!"
As they were talking, Brittany's elder sister, Mia Mamet, came in. Her eyes lit up when she saw the red rosewood box.
She had forgotten that she still had this at home.
There was gold in the needle. Although it was mixed with other things, there was still some gold. Also, the red rosewood box was a good thing. If she took it to the pawnshop, she might be able to exchange it for more than ten ounces of silver.
Mia Mamet raised her eyebrows. "How could you? You've married, so you're secretly moving your parents' family's things to your parents-in-law's home?"
Brittany quickly wrapped the things up and held the bundle in her arms.
Mia Mamet said anxiously, "You can't take this thing. We're running out of money at home. I'll take it to the pawn shop to exchange for some silver coins."
Brittany sneered." You just sold me for five ounces of silver coins. How long has it been that you run out the money?"
"For an ordinary family, five ounces of silver is enough for a year."
Mia Mamet said angrily, "What do you know? Mother needs to take medicine every day. How many days can that bit of silver coins last?"
Mrs. Lee pursed her lips in bed. She did not take medicine every day. She had not taken medicine for more than half a month.
Mia Mamet, this wretched girl, said that she didn't have money to buy the medicine.
Brittany did not argue with Mia and only said, "I won't sell this thing. It's useful to me."
Upon hearing that she wouldn't sell it, Mrs. Lee heaved a sigh of relief and lay down.
However, Mia did not agree. "You can't take it away. This is something passed down from generation to generation. You, a married woman, have no right to take it!"
Brittany looked at her coldly and suddenly said, "Mia, I want to ask you."
"You were the one who asked Aunt Lisa for the marriage to Dave Rivers. When the Rivers family gave you the betrothal money, why did you refuse to marry the next day?"
"It's fine if you don't want to marry, but why do you still want me to marry?"
The original Brittany was also a fool. When her eldest sister and mother cried, she agreed.
Mia's eyes flickered. "The betrothal money was already half spent on buying medicine for Mother. What if you don't marry him?"
Brittany stared at Mia, "I'm asking you why you suddenly changed your mind and didn't want to get married."
