Brittany did not say anything for a long time.
A few months ago, her father went to another county to treat a patient and disappeared inexplicably.
No one knew whether he was dead or alive.
Her mother fell ill and took medicine for two to three months. The dozens of ounces of silver coins that the family had saved up were all spent.
If it wasn't for the fact that they still had ten acres of land, which they had rented out to the tenant farmers, and the tenant farmers had paid the rent, the entire family would have nothing to eat.
Brittany was not surprised by Mrs. Morgan's words. Her mother was brainless and would not think about how the whole family earned their life after selling the land.
Perhaps she thought that she would be able to find her father as soon as she went to the prefecture capital, and then the whole family would live happily ever after.
They rested for a while before setting off together.
It was three to four miles which didn't take long for them to reach the destination.
When they reached the village entrance, Sam stopped in his tracks. "I won't go in. I'll wait for you here."
It was a little awkward for him to follow Brittany to her parents' home alone.
Brittany nodded. "I'll be out in at most an hour."
Sam waved his hand. "There's no rush. It's rare for you to come home. You should have lunch before leaving."
"Never mind. I'll just stroll around."
Brittany glanced at him and did not say anything. She walked home with Mrs. Morgan.
When they reached the door, Mrs. Morgan shouted in the direction of the courtyard, "Hey, Brittany is back."
As she shouted, a seven or eight-year-old boy ran out of the house. He hugged Brittany's leg and sobbed, "Brittany, I miss you so much..."
The relationship was a strange thing.
Even though Brittany felt that she should be unfamiliar with her younger brother, Chris Mamet, her heart still softened when he hugged her leg.
Just as she was about to reach out to touch Chris's head, her hand quickly retracted.
Chris had not washed his hair for a long time. His hair was tangled in strands, and she really could not bring herself to do it.
Brittany gently pulled him away. "Where's Mother?"
Chris pointed into the room.
Brittany led Chris into the house and saw her mother, Mrs. Lee, lying on the bed with a tired expression.
Seeing her enter, Mrs. Lee's eyes lit up. She propped herself up and said, "You're back just in time. I'm going to the prefecture capital to find your father. I don't have money, but your elder sister is stopping me from selling the land."
"Help me up. I'm going to find your uncle and ask him to persuade your sister."
Brittany looked down at Mrs. Lee. "Mother, you are going to sell the land and go to the prefecture capital to look for my father?"
"What do you plan to do if you can't find him?"
Mrs. Lee was stunned. "Can't find him? How could I not find him? I will find your father."
"The prefecture capital is so big. It's not that easy to find someone. Besides, they only said that he looked like my father. He might not be him." Brittany said calmly.
"If you sell the land for travel expenses and can't find my father, what will the family earn for living when you come back? Waiting to die?"
Mrs. Lee clutched her chest and cried. "Why do I care so much?"
"In short, if I can't find your father, there's no point in living. I might as well die."
Brittany pursed her lips. "My sister is old enough to get married, but what about my brother? Will he die with you?"
Mrs. Lee cried even harder and shook her head on the pillow. "I don't know. How would I know? Anyway, I'm going to look for your father."
Brittany was extremely disappointed.
Mrs. Lee was the kind of woman who would not be able to live without a man.
Her father had gone missing, and the mother did not stand up to take care of the children. She only cried every day. How could her body get better?
It seemed like she only cared about herself and didn't even want to care about her younger brother.
