Although he wiped away her tears, his answer left a void in her heart.
It was clear that he simply refused to believe her, choosing instead to ignore the situation.

After all, given the past incidents, he was well aware of Yale Shaw's character. Regarding her, Shaw was always entwined in her affairs, nearly ruining her on several occasions.
