If this were on the United States East Coast, one had to go around the Panama Canal, not only wasting time but also adding a significant cost to the ship ticket.
More importantly, most of Australasia's immigrant ships were on the West coast of the United States; after all, it is closer to Australasia, just across the Pacific Ocean.
For such reasons, a massive influx of unemployed populations rapidly poured into the West Coast, precipitating the economic collapse of the West alongside the Eastern Coast. Consequently, the states on the West Coast harbored even more resentment towards the states on the Eastern Coast.
All States, led by California State, demanded that the eastern states control the unemployed population, reducing the speed at which they were moving westward.
But the problem was that these unemployed populations were clearly beyond control, incapable of halting their struggle for livelihood by mere governmental decrees.
