Mr. Johnny picked up a rosewood box that had been placed on the table earlier and handed it to Scarlett Glenn.
Mrs. Herd said, "That's more like it. Scarlett, go ahead, open it and see. If it's not something good, we don't want it."
Scarlett had originally wanted to refuse, but with Mrs. Herd speaking like that, she really did not know how to decline.
She stood up, stepped forward, and respectfully extended both hands to receive the box, "Thank you, Mr. Johnny."
Scarlett was meticulous and polite, and Mr. Johnny quietly nodded in his heart. From what he could see, Scarlett was neither servile nor overbearing, even in their presence without any deliberate flattery—a fine young lady indeed, and just as good as he had heard.
Mr. Johnny said, "Don't be so formal. Just like Ethan, you can call me Grandfather."
