Nathaniel York watched Matilda Jenkins' retreating back and whispered low, "I haven't gotten you yet, how could I bear to die."
Matilda Jenkins walked out foolishly, only truly reacting after she had left the detention center gate.
Matilda Jenkins suddenly turned around, but she could no longer see Nathaniel York's shadow.
Scarlett Glenn honked the horn twice, "Get in the car..."
Matilda Jenkins got into the car, dazed.
"Did you see him?"
"I did."
"How was it?"
"He... should be... quite well, I guess?" Matilda Jenkins licked her lips, as if she could still feel the temperature of his kiss on them.
She tousled her hair, feeling utterly useless for not asking him how he was doing inside, whether he was okay.
But in such a place, it couldn't be good, right?
Matilda Jenkins sighed, feeling strangely off today, unable to pinpoint exactly why, just that it was quite peculiar.
