Last night's experience made Flora Irving see Ghiovani Herd for who he truly is: not a man at all, but a useless dud.
He's not even worthy of being compared to a dog, since dogs would at least fight and bite when their territory gets invaded.

Flora used to think that Ghiovani didn't inherit the Herd Family's assets because he had chosen her over the family. She had felt smug about that for many years.
But now she knows: it's not that he chose to give up the Herd Family,
It's that the Herd Family gave up on him. Old Mr. Herd would rather let his own son go, as long as he secured his grandson. It seems he knew very well that his son was not up to the task, just a worthless loser.
Flora is really regretful that she wasted so many years of her life on such a loser.
