Louis Jefferson personally drove them to school. As he said goodbye, he advised, "Persevere for just a little over a month. Once the entrance examinations are over, you'll be liberated. After school this afternoon, wait for me at the school gate, okay?"
His words were primarily aimed at Ella Lacey. By habit, Sally Jefferson usually went for her art tuition after school instead of heading home with them.
Ella hung her head, nodding a little. She was still a bit downcast.
That morning, she had wrestled with the idea of not going to school. What was the point of enduring till the entrance exams? She felt her life hadn't turned out as expected, without any pleasant surprises.
"Ella, wear this." Louis picked up a small pink hat from the car trunk. The hat had a pretty bow on the brim, and he handed it to her.
Ella looked at the hat with surprise. It was delicate, brightly colored, glossy and soft, very comfortable and beautiful to the eye.
