When she arrived home, her mother, Nancy Scott was already cooking. Seeing her sudden appearance, she couldn't help but fuss about, "You could at least call in advance when you plan to come over. Look, I just cooked rice for two. Now I have to steam another big bowl of rice."
"Mum, there's no way I can eat a big bowl of rice on my own!" Jaylene Ziel quickly stopped her mother from adding more rice, "You don't need to go to such trouble. Just cook another dish. If there's not enough rice later, we can just boil some frozen dumplings."
She knew her mother liked to make dumplings and store them in the refrigerator for future convenience.
"Just one person?" Nancy Scott looked up in surprise, then lowered her gaze and asked, "What happened? Did you and Joseph get into a fight?"
"No, he was a bit preoccupied today, so he couldn't come over." Jaylene lied whilst shaking her head, then coquettishly said, "Mum, can you stop being overly suspicious? Why would there be so many arguments?"
