He carried her down, naturally wrapping his arms around her as they headed to the dining room, and with a snap of his fingers commanded the maid to cover the piano.
Breakfast, as usual, was quiet.
"I'm granting you one wish, except for a divorce," he said suddenly at the until-then silent table, his tone magnanimous.
Charlotte paused, frowning slightly as she looked at him.
"If you think this is compensation, you're wrong. I won't make amends for what happened that night, because it was your mistake to begin with. Since we're talking about a wish, it's about your birthday wish," Kevin Cliff clarified, seeing through her thoughts.
"No make-up can erase memories," Charlotte replied and continued eating her breakfast without looking up.

The silence returned.
