Chapter 96 - Hardest fight

The snake's shimmering, windy-green scales seemed to pulse with a kind of vitality that Elrian hadn't seen before. It moved with a fluidity that seemed out of place, given the force it had displayed. Serpwingra's voice resonated in Elrian's mind, tinged with a note of urgency.

"That's no ordinary snake, Elrian," Serpwingra cautioned. "Its aura is much denser and more refined than the creatures we've encountered so far. And, from the way its scales glimmer, it's evident that it possesses a powerful wind affinity."

Elrian took a step back, his senses on high alert. Every movement of the snake, every flick of its tail, seemed to stir the air around it. Even stationary, the creature gave off an aura of relentless motion. Its eyes, like twin vortexes, seemed to suck in all the light around, focusing intently on Elrian.

"Its abilities are tied to speed," Serpwingra continued, its voice echoing Elrian's own observations. "That needle-like attack wasn't just propelled with physical force; it was accelerated using its wind affinity. This creature can harness the power of wind to augment its speed and agility. A direct confrontation might not be wise."

Elrian nodded silently, acknowledging Serpwingra's advice. He remembered the tales of creatures that roamed these forests – creatures that defied the common notions of strength and power. The snake in front of him was a living testament to those tales.

Tension filled the air. Both predator and prey sized each other up, each waiting for the other to make the first move. But behind Elrian's wary gaze was the determination to understand, to learn, and to adapt to the ever-changing world of qi and its mysteries.

The forest surroundings seemed to blur as the snake darted toward Elrian, its movements swift and fluid, like a gust of wind brushing past him. Every time Elrian tried to anticipate its path, it would shift, its motions erratic but precise. The snake's body coiled and uncoiled with astonishing speed, making it seem like there were multiple snakes instead of just one.

Serpwingra tried to aid Elrian by manipulating the wind currents, attempting to redirect or slow the snake. But the creature's natural affinity for wind rendered most of Serpwingra's efforts ineffective. Each time the wind currents altered, the snake moved in tandem with the gusts, using them to its advantage.

Elrian's sword danced in his hand, the blade slicing through the air, trying to intercept the snake. But every strike met only empty space or, at best, grazed the creature's scales. The frustration built within Elrian with each miss, realizing that traditional methods would not work here.

A sudden sharp pain in his leg made him stumble. The snake had managed to land a bite. Thankfully, no venom coursed through his veins, but the puncture wounds were deep, and blood oozed out.

Gritting his teeth, Elrian tried a different approach. Instead of directly attacking, he began using his sword defensively, creating a barrier between himself and the snake. The aim was to tire the creature out, wait for it to make a mistake.

But the snake's relentless assault didn't give Elrian a moment's respite. It came at him from all angles - from the ground, darting up from beneath the leaves, or dropping down from the branches above.

Sweat dripped down Elrian's brow, his breathing became labored, and every muscle screamed in protest. The snake's agility was incredible, and it seemed to have endless stamina. Another bite, this time on his arm, another slash on his torso. The wounds were beginning to pile up.

In a desperate attempt, Elrian decided to change the battleground's dynamics. He began focusing his wind energy on the environment rather than directly on the snake. Leaves, twigs, and small rocks started swirling around, creating a miniature cyclone. The debris acted as a screen, obscuring the snake's vision and hopefully slowing its movements.

For a brief moment, the strategy seemed to work. The snake hesitated, its strikes becoming less accurate. Seizing the opportunity, Elrian lunged, his sword aimed directly at where he predicted the snake would be.

But the creature's natural speed was undeterred. It darted out of the way, and Elrian's sword met only the ground, getting embedded in the soil.

The snake, sensing an advantage, lunged for a final strike. But Elrian was prepared. Using his wind manipulation, he shot upwards, narrowly avoiding the snake's jaws. Hanging in the air for a mere second, Elrian pulled his sword free and, using the momentum of his aerial movement, brought it down on the snake.

The blade struck true, pinning the snake to the ground. The creature writhed for a moment and then lay still.

Panting heavily, Elrian stepped back, looking at the vanquished foe. The battle had been one of the most challenging he'd faced, not due to the snake's strength, but its sheer agility and speed.

Serpwingra's voice echoed in his mind, "That was too close. Its speed was unlike anything we've faced before. But remember, every battle teaches us something new."

Elrian nodded, realizing the importance of adapting and evolving his strategies. He had won today, but there were many more challenges awaiting him.

Elrian's chest heaved as he took a moment to assess himself. The exhilaration of the battle still pulsed through his veins, but with it came a realization. His Qi pool, which was near its peak just moments ago, had been significantly drained.

The snake's relentless speed had forced him to continuously use his wind manipulation abilities at an unprecedented rate. Every dodge, every defense, every counter had consumed Qi. And using the aerial movement in that last desperate lunge, while effective, had sapped a significant portion of his energy.

He placed a hand over his heart, feeling the reduced pulsations of his Qi. It was a stark reminder that battles weren't just about strength or skill but also about resource management. Having a vast Qi pool was advantageous, but without the knowledge and practice to utilize it efficiently, it could be depleted rapidly.

Serpwingra's voice resonated softly, "Elrian, that was an intense battle. The amount of Qi you used was enormous. It's a testament to the creature's prowess and your determination. But remember, it's not just about how much Qi you have, but how you use it."

Elrian nodded in agreement, taking Serpwingra's words to heart. "I was caught off guard. Its speed, its agility... I've never faced a creature like that before. I resorted to using my abilities recklessly."

The realization made him sit down, leaning against a tree trunk. He closed his eyes, trying to regulate his breathing and recuperate some of his spent Qi. The gentle rustle of leaves and the distant chirping of birds provided a soothing backdrop.

He understood now that he needed to be more strategic, to be more in tune with his surroundings, and to better anticipate his opponent's moves. He also needed to find a way to recover or conserve his Qi during battles. This experience was a harsh but necessary lesson.

After some time, Elrian stood up, feeling a bit rejuvenated. He looked at the fallen snake, paying his respects to the fierce adversary that had taught him so much. With renewed determination, he continued on his path, ready to face the next challenge, equipped with the lessons he had just learned.
