Chapter 93 - Ember Squirrels

Elrian's heart raced as the Ember Squirrels continued their relentless assault from above. Their fiery projectiles rained down on him, creating a seemingly endless barrage of danger. The atmosphere was suffocating, thick with smoke and the scorching heat of their attacks.

"Darn it!" Elrian cursed, dodging another molten ember. The ground underfoot was growing warmer, and in the corner of his eye, he could see small fires starting from the residual flames of the squirrel's attacks.

"Elrian, use the wind!" Serpwingra's voice called out.

Elrian gritted his teeth, knowing full well his wind abilities were not strong enough to disrupt the sturdy trees or the agile Ember Squirrels. However, he had to try. Gathering his focus, he channeled what little wind energy he had, attempting to create gusts to divert the Ember Squirrels' attacks.

But the effort was like trying to fan away a forest fire with a mere leaf. The gusts, weak and fluttery, did little to deter the Ember Squirrels. They chittered in amusement, their fiery eyes gleaming with mischief and predatory intent.

Feeling the heat intensifying and realizing that his wind was having little to no effect, Elrian's thoughts raced. He needed a new strategy, and fast. His eyes darted around the forest floor, searching for any means of defense or escape.

Suddenly, a plan began to form in his mind. If he couldn't knock them out of the trees or disrupt their attacks with wind, maybe he could use the environment to his advantage.

Spotting a nearby clearing, he sprinted towards it, hoping to draw the squirrels out into open ground where he might stand a better chance. As he ran, he attempted to summon protective gusts around him, trying to deflect or cool down the fiery projectiles.

Reaching the clearing, he turned to face his adversaries, sword at the ready. Without the cover of trees, he hoped to have a clearer view of their attacks, allowing him to anticipate and dodge more effectively.

The Ember Squirrels, sensing the change in terrain, became more cautious. But they weren't giving up. They circled the clearing, looking for openings, waiting for the right moment.

Elrian took a deep breath, readying himself for the next phase of this fiery confrontation. He knew he couldn't rely solely on his nascent wind abilities, but with a combination of wit, agility, and determination, he hoped to turn the tide in his favor.

The tension in the clearing was palpable. The Ember Squirrels circled overhead, their beady eyes fixed on Elrian, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Elrian's earlier plan, to draw them into the clearing, had failed. The open ground was no advantage against foes that held the higher ground. He could feel the weight of their gaze, could hear the sizzle of their fiery projectiles even before they were launched.

Taking a deep breath, Elrian decided to take the fight to the trees. The terrain was unfamiliar, the branches dense and the footing treacherous. But if he stayed on the ground, he'd be nothing more than an easy target.

With a burst of speed, Elrian dashed towards the nearest tree, his blade slashing at the lower branches to clear a path. The trunks were thick and rough, but with every ounce of strength he had, he began to climb.

The squirrels, sensing his intent, began to bombard him with more fervor. Fiery embers scorched the air around him, singeing his clothes and leaving painful burns on his exposed skin.

Serpwingra's voice echoed in his mind, a mix of concern and frustration. "Elrian, this isn't working! You're in their territory now!"

He grunted, ignoring the burning pain and pushing forward. The more he ascended, the more he realized just how outmatched he was. The Ember Squirrels were agile, moving through the trees with a natural grace that he couldn't hope to match.

Reaching a thick branch, he tried to steady himself, hoping to get a momentary respite. But no sooner had he set foot on it, an Ember Squirrel lunged at him from a hidden crevice, its sharp claws extended.

Elrian narrowly avoided its attack, losing his balance in the process. He clung to the branch, his fingers digging into the bark, desperate to pull himself back up. But another fiery projectile hit its mark, sending a searing pain across his shoulder.

He cried out, the pain momentarily blinding him. His grip on the branch weakened, and with a heart-stopping sensation, he began to fall.

The world seemed to slow down as he plummeted, the ground rushing up to meet him. Branches and leaves became a blur, the wind howling in his ears. Serpwingra's panicked voice was a distant echo, its words lost to the roaring wind. But amidst that chaos, a singular thought formed in Elrian's mind - the Aerial Movement technique.

Driven by desperation, Elrian channeled his Qi and focused on the technique. He felt a slight buoyancy, a subtle push against the force of gravity. Instead of continuing his free fall, Elrian began to glide sideways, his trajectory changing. With every ounce of concentration he had, he directed himself towards a nearby tree.

Branches whipped past him as he aimed for a particularly thick limb. With a final push of Qi, he managed to grab onto it, halting his descent. It took a moment for his heart to stop racing, the reality of his near-death experience settling in.

He looked up, catching the surprised eyes of the Ember Squirrels who had expected to see him crash to the ground. They seemed taken aback by his sudden change in direction and his ability to defy gravity, if only momentarily.

Catching his breath, Elrian gave a grim smile. His body was battered and scorched, but he had learned something invaluable in this encounter. With the Aerial Movement technique and his newfound understanding of it, he could navigate the treetops with much more ease and precision. The fight was far from over, but Elrian felt a renewed sense of determination. He wouldn't be easily beaten.
