Chapter 56 - Disbelief

As they stepped into the sun-drenched lanes of their quaint village, Elder Calyx turned to them with a warm smile. "Arlan, Lysandra, Elrian, go home and get yourselves ready. Tonight, we're going to have a gathering to celebrate Elrian's advancement. I'll summon the other Qi cultivators of our village to join us. This is a momentous occasion."

Arlan and Lysandra nodded, their faces brimming with pride and relief. "Thank you, Elder Calyx. We will prepare at once," Lysandra said as they made their way back to their home.

The moment they crossed the threshold of their humble abode, Arlan couldn't help but embrace his wife and son. "This is a significant day, not just for you, Elrian, but for us and for our community," he said, his eyes twinkling.

Lysandra went into a motherly mode, bustling around and picking out clothes for them to wear. "We must look our best. This is not just any gathering; it's an acknowledgment of your hard work, Elrian."

Elrian stood there, soaking in the excitement that buzzed through the air. He went to his room and chose his most decent tunic and trousers. The reality of the situation was beginning to settle in. This wasn't just about him becoming a Qi cultivator; it was about joining a group of people who held the spiritual and martial welfare of the entire village in their hands.

As he looked at himself in the reflection of the small, polished metal mirror on the wall, he remembered the first inklings of Qi that coursed through his veins, the exhilarating rush that made his spirit soar. How far he had come in just a few days.

In the main room, Lysandra laid out a platter of fruits and snacks. "We'll bring these as an offering. It's customary to share blessings in our community, and today is all about blessings," she explained.

Arlan, who was sharpening his sword, looked up. "It's important to remember that becoming a Qi cultivator doesn't just give you power, Elrian. It comes with responsibilities. And one of them is to contribute to the well-being of our people."

Elrian nodded. His father's words settled deep into his heart, a constant reminder of the path that he had now chosen—or perhaps, the path that had chosen him. "I understand, Father."

After what felt like an endless period of waiting, the sky slowly turned a gradient of oranges and purples, signaling the onset of evening. Arlan sheathed his sword, Lysandra gathered the platter of fruits, and Elrian took one last look at his reflection. This was it; a new chapter in his life was about to begin.

They stepped out, locking the door behind them, and made their way back to Elder Calyx's residence. The air seemed different now, thicker with anticipation and imbued with a quiet sense of reverence. They weren't just going to a gathering; they were stepping into a circle that would influence the course of Elrian's life in the years to come.

As they approached, they saw that others had begun to arrive—a mix of familiar and new faces, all Qi cultivators, a group Elrian would soon become part of. Each of these individuals had years, if not decades, of cultivation experience. It was an honor, but also a reminder of the great path that lay ahead, a path fraught with challenges and responsibilities but also filled with endless opportunities for growth.

"Ah, here they are," Elder Calyx announced as they entered his spacious hall, which was now lit by warm, glowing lanterns. "Tonight, we gather to acknowledge and celebrate a new addition to our ranks. Let's welcome Elrian, the youngest Qi cultivator our village has ever seen."

As they stepped inside, Elrian felt multiple gazes settle on him—assessing, wondering, perhaps even a little skeptical. But it didn't matter. What mattered was that this was his first real step into the world of cultivation, a step into a greater community and a greater responsibility.

And so, with his parents by his side and under the watchful eyes of the village's Qi cultivators, Elrian felt a sense of both burden and bliss settle onto his young shoulders. It was a duality he knew he would carry for the rest of his life.

Elrian looked around the room, his eyes darting from one face to another. His initial excitement waned slightly as he counted the number of people present. Including himself and his parents, there were only six people. Elder Calyx, who looked to be in his 80s, stood with the dignified poise of someone who had seen countless seasons change. The other two individuals, a man and a woman, appeared to be in their 60s.

Elrian could sense Qi from each of them, though none felt particularly strong. What struck him more was the absence of elemental energies; they seemed to be just as straightforward as his parents in their cultivation. He felt a twinge of surprise; his mental image of a room full of experienced, formidable Qi cultivators had not aligned with this reality. The room was mostly filled with the elderly, which made him wonder—where were the younger cultivators?

His pondering was interrupted when he caught the eyes of the two older Qi cultivators sizing him up. They glanced at each other, then back at him, their eyes narrowing slightly. The atmosphere turned subtly tense.

"Excuse my asking, but how old is Elrian?" The woman broke the silence, her voice tinged with incredulity.

"He just turned five a few months ago," Lysandra replied, a hint of pride lacing her words.

The woman's eyes widened, and the man beside her let out an audible gasp. "Five? Five years old and already a Qi cultivator?"

"That's... that's unbelievable," the man chimed in, exchanging a look of disbelief with the woman. "I've never heard of anyone awakening to Qi so young, not even in the old legends."

The atmosphere in the room shifted once again, now filled with a blend of awe and skepticism. Elder Calyx raised his hand, calling for attention. "Let us remember why we have gathered here. It's not to question the incredible, but to acknowledge it, and to prepare for the responsibilities it brings. I've known Arlan and Lysandra for many years. They wouldn't make a claim this momentous without reason."

Elrian felt a bit uncomfortable under the scrutinous eyes of the elders but stood tall nonetheless. These were the people he'd be learning from, growing with, and, ultimately, joining in the duty of protecting their village.

Yet, the diversity in age and the scarcity of cultivators weighed on him. If most of the Qi cultivators were this old, who would protect the village in the years to come? It was a thought that sobered his young mind, making the room feel a bit heavier despite the warm glow of the lanterns. With this realization, Elrian felt both the significance and the gravity of his early entry into the world of Qi cultivation settle upon him.

The eyes that once questioned him now held a glint of expectation. The shortage of young blood, the responsibility that came with his newfound abilities—all of it seemed to coalesce into a single point, focusing on him, Elrian, the five-year-old who had just awakened his Qi.

The atmosphere was thick, palpable with both skepticism and hope. A new chapter was unfolding, not just for Elrian, but for the entire village. And with that, the weight of expectation, responsibility, and future challenges seemed to grow heavier on Elrian's young shoulders.
