Chapter 48 - Pure sword training pt1

The dense foliage of the forest muted the sunlight, casting a greenish glow that illuminated their path. Elrian, with sword in hand, moved cautiously, each step taken with deliberate intent. It had been some time since they entered the forest, and the non-Qi creatures remained elusive.

After what felt like hours, a rustling sound caught Elrian's ear. A muscular, antlered deer, larger than the usual species, bounded into a clearing. This was no ordinary deer, but a forest guardian, known for their swift moves and unpredictable combat patterns.

Elrian squared up, taking a deep breath. He remembered his resolve: this was a test of pure technique, no Qi, no wind manipulation. Just him, his sword, and a formidable opponent.

As the deer charged, its hooves thundering against the ground, Elrian's first swing was deftly avoided, the creature leaping into the air and attempting to bring its weight down upon him. He rolled away just in time, narrowly avoiding the crushing blow.

"Your stance!" his father shouted, noticing Elrian's slight off-balance positioning. "Keep it firm!"

Elrian's mother added, "Watch its movement, predict, don't just react!"

He acknowledged their advice, adjusting his posture and focusing on the deer's movements. But the guardian was swift, darting around him in feints and charges. Each clash was a dance of steel and sinew, Elrian's blade singing as it met air more than its target.

However, the longer the battle went on, the more Elrian began to understand. The deer's pattern, once erratic, began to form a rhythm in his mind. He saw openings, brief moments where defense was lowered, and took advantage. With a renewed clarity and the guidance from his parents still echoing in his mind, Elrian's strikes became more precise, more deliberate.

A feint to the left, a dodge to the right, and Elrian saw his opportunity. As the deer lunged forward, he sidestepped and swung his sword, catching the creature on its flank. It wasn't a fatal blow, but it was enough to stagger the guardian and allow Elrian to gain the upper hand.

With a few more strategic movements, Elrian managed to bring the deer down, not with overpowering force but with refined technique and understanding. Breathing heavily, sweat pouring down his brow, he sheathed his sword, paying his respects to the forest guardian he had bested.

His parents approached, their expressions a mix of relief and pride. "Well done," his father commented, clapping him on the back. "You've come far, but remember, every fight is a lesson. Always learn."

His mother nodded, her eyes studying Elrian. "You've shown great restraint and growth. Remember the feel of this fight, internalize it. It will guide you in the battles to come."

Elrian took a moment to catch his breath, the weight of the encounter sinking in. It was a humbling experience, one that showed him that no matter how much he trained, there was always more to learn, always room to grow. The forest, with its challenges and trials, was the perfect teacher.

As the trio continued deeper into the forest, the ambiance shifted with each step, hinting at the many creatures lurking in the shadows, watching and waiting. With the experience from his first encounter fresh in his mind, Elrian walked with heightened senses, sword at the ready.

The forest, in all its deceptive tranquility, harbored secrets in its shadows. One such shadow slithered silently amidst the underbrush, undetectable to the untrained eye. The creature, a Scaled Serpent, was notorious for its agility and camouflage. It was known to seamlessly blend into its surroundings, making it a treacherous foe for many.

Elrian's pulse quickened as he spotted the faint glint reflecting off the serpent's iridescent scales. A soft, rhythmic hissing filled the air, echoing with an eerie resonance. For a moment, the young cultivator hesitated, the creature's mesmerizing patterns inducing a fleeting sense of vulnerability. However, his recent skirmish had bolstered his confidence, and he readied himself for the ensuing battle.

Without warning, the serpent lunged. Its movements were fluid, impossibly quick, the distance between them disappearing in a heartbeat. The venomous fangs sought their mark, but Elrian's reflexes, sharpened by intense training, allowed him to barely evade the deadly strike. The ground where he had stood moments ago now bore the corrosive evidence of the serpent's venom.

Reacting to the creature's aggressive initiation, Elrian's sword sliced through the air, aiming for a quick end. But the serpent was not to be underestimated. With a swift contortion, it evaded his blade, coiling and readying itself for another attack. Its eyes , cold and calculating, seemed to study Elrian's every move, searching for an opening, a lapse in his defenses.

"Heed your surroundings, Elrian!" his mother's voice echoed from a distance. "Its strength lies in ambush. Don't let it corner you!"

With renewed focus, Elrian started to manipulate his position, ensuring his back was never exposed to the dense foliage. Every step he took was met with the serpent's attempts to corner him, the creature proving itself to be a master tactician. It would strike, feint, and retract, each time forcing Elrian to readjust, trying to wear him down both mentally and physically.

However, the lessons from his parents were not lost on the young cultivator. He began to anticipate the serpent's patterns, recognizing the slight muscular twitch before each lunge, the subtle narrowing of its eyes before a feint. With each passing second, the dance between the two combatants became more intense, their movements synchronizing in a deadly ballet.

"Remember your sword's weight, son!" his father's voice broke through the tension. "Use it to guide your strikes, don't fight against it!"

Taking the advice to heart, Elrian began to employ broader, sweeping strokes, utilizing the natural momentum of his sword to both attack and defend. Each swing became a potential parry, each parry a potential counter. The serpent, for all its agility, was slowly becoming predictable in its desperation to land a blow.

With a sudden surge of inspiration, Elrian feigned vulnerability, allowing a perceived opening in his defense. The serpent, sensing an opportunity, lunged with all its might. However, it was a ruse. Using the weight of his blade, Elrian pivoted, redirecting the serpent's momentum and delivering a powerful slash across its body.

The serpent recoiled, its movements now sluggish, the earlier grace replaced by frantic writhing. Sensing victory, Elrian pressed the advantage, evading a last-ditch venomous spit and finishing the creature with a decisive blow.

As the serpent lay defeated, Elrian took a moment to catch his breath, reflecting on the intense encounter. The lessons of the battle were not lost on him: to always be observant, to use one's strengths wisely, to trust in the wisdom of those who have walked the path before him.
