Chapter 39 - Using qi in swordplay

Resuming their positions in the training yard, Elrian's parents stood side by side, each holding a wooden training sword. The sun cast elongated shadows as the afternoon began, making the environment serene yet expectant.

"Elrian," Lissandra began, pointing her sword forward, "Your foundation in the basic techniques is essential. However, now that you've ascended to the Qi Sensing stage, it's time to integrate Qi into your swordplay. Doing so will immensely augment your combat capabilities."

Arlan nodded in agreement, "Remember, in the world outside, strength alone won't suffice. You'll often encounter opponents stronger than you. But with a perfect blend of Qi and sword techniques, you can overcome even those seemingly insurmountable odds."

He demonstrated by focusing his Qi into the sword. The wooden blade began emanating a soft glow. With a swift motion, Arlan slashed the air, producing a visible wave of energy that traveled a few meters before dissipating.

"That," he said, "was a basic Qi-infused slash. The Qi augments the sword's strength, increasing its cutting capability."

Lissandra took a step forward, "Now, let's break it down, starting with the grip. When you hold your sword, channel your Qi into your palms. Imagine it flowing from your core, through your arms, and into the hilt. This not only strengthens your grip but also ensures that the sword becomes an extension of your Qi."

Elrian tried imitating her, feeling the Qi move as directed. The sensation was different, as if the sword was now a part of him.

"Good," Lissandra praised. "Now, for the guard. When you're blocking an attack, the Qi should flow to the part of the blade taking the impact. This reinforces the blade, allowing it to withstand stronger blows."

Arlan jumped in, "Remember, son, it's not just about strengthening the blade. Using Qi can also make your movements swifter. Channel it to your feet, and you can increase your footwork's speed and agility. But it's crucial to maintain balance. Over-relying on Qi-enhanced speed can leave you vulnerable if you're not careful."

Elrian listened attentively, absorbing every word and practicing in tandem.

"Lastly," Lissandra said, "when you attack, focus your Qi on the blade's edge. This not only enhances the sharpness but also increases the strike's penetrating power. However, ensure you don't overextend or drain your Qi reservoir."

Arlan added a cautionary note, "Qi, though a powerful ally, is not inexhaustible. It's essential to monitor your Qi levels during combat. Overextending can leave you drained and vulnerable."

The afternoon was filled with rigorous practice, as Elrian tried to incorporate Qi into every aspect of his swordplay. The sound of wood striking wood resonated, interspersed with words of guidance and encouragement from his parents.

"As you progress," Lissandra said during a short break, "you'll find advanced techniques that merge Qi and swordsmanship seamlessly. For now, focus on mastering these basics."

Arlan concluded, "In the vast world outside, there will always be someone stronger. But with dedication, perseverance, and the right techniques, you can stand tall among them."

Elrian, drenched in sweat but filled with determination, nodded. The journey ahead was long, but with such guidance, he felt prepared to face any challenge.

As the hues of twilight painted the horizon, the family gathered for dinner. The aroma of a hearty stew wafted through the air, filling the room with a comforting scent. As they settled at the table, Elrian's eyes darted to a small pouch on the countertop. The Qi cores they had retrieved from the wolves were inside.

Clearing his throat hesitantly, Elrian began, "Mother, Father, I've been thinking... Can I perhaps use one of the wolf Qi cores for something? I want to experiment a bit and understand its properties better."

Lissandra raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement in her eyes. "Experiment? And here I thought you'd had enough of cultivation for one day."

Arlan chuckled softly, "It's commendable that you're eager to learn and experiment. But remember, those Qi cores are precious. Not only for their value but also for their potential uses."

He paused, pondering for a moment, then continued, "However, seeing your enthusiasm, we can spare one for you. We need the other two to fulfill the village's quota, as they help sustain the village's defenses and daily operations."

Elrian's eyes lit up with gratitude. "Thank you. I promise I'll be careful."

Lissandra nodded, handing him a small Qi core from the pouch. It pulsed softly with a gentle blue hue, brimming with the essence of the wolf from which it had come. "Remember, Qi cores are concentrated reservoirs of energy. Treat them with respect and caution."

Elrian held the Qi core gently in his hands, feeling its energy. "I'll be cautious, Mother. I just believe that if I can understand its essence, it might aid in my cultivation and combat techniques."

Arlan smiled, ruffling Elrian's hair affectionately. "Always the curious one. Just ensure you don't overexert yourself. The path of cultivation is a marathon, not a sprint."

Dinner continued with light-hearted banter and shared memories, but Elrian's mind was already racing with possibilities, eager to explore the potential of the Qi core he now held.

The remnants of dinner still lingered on the wooden table as Lissandra began clearing away the plates. With a thoughtful expression, she turned to Elrian, "You know, as much as your cultivation and combat skills are vital, it's equally important to broaden your knowledge about the world."

Arlan nodded in agreement, pushing back his chair and standing up. He walked over to a large wooden cabinet, its dark polished surface reflecting the dim candlelight. Pulling out a drawer, he extracted several worn-out books and set them on the table before Elrian."These are some of the books your mother and I collected over the years. They cover a wide range of topics: history, culture, basic principles of cultivation, and even tales of legendary heroes. I believe they'll provide you with a well-rounded understanding of the world we live in."

Elrian, intrigued, picked up one of the books, its leather-bound cover slightly faded. The title read, "Tales of the Ancient Kingdoms." Flipping through the pages, he could see intricate illustrations depicting grand battles, majestic cities, and tales of love and betrayal."It's essential to know about our past and the cultures that shape our present," Lissandra added. "Such knowledge can guide you in making informed decisions, understanding people better, and even helping in unexpected situations."
