Chapter 104 - Dissecting and seeing water

Lyssandra motioned towards the massive serpent-like creature they had hauled back. "This, Elrian," she began, her voice heavy with a mix of respect and caution, "is probably the most formidable opponent we've ever encountered. It's not just its sheer size or strength that posed a challenge. Its behavior was... erratic, unpredictable."

Arlan nodded, "Exactly. At one moment, it would move like any other snake, slithering and coiling. But then suddenly, it would do something entirely uncharacteristic of snakes. It's as if it momentarily forgot its natural instincts and adopted some other creature's behavior."

Elrian frowned, trying to picture the battle in his head. "That sounds... confusing."

"It was," Lysandra agreed. "Many times in our battle, we found ourselves second-guessing our tactics. One moment you'd predict its movement based on how a snake would act, and the next, it would surprise you."

Arlan added, "This creature reinforced an essential lesson for us. No matter how well you think you know your opponent, always be ready for the unexpected. And in such situations, speed and agility can be your biggest allies."

Lysandra, her graceful movements always a sight to behold during combat, spoke up, "Today, our agility was our saving grace. The creature was slower than us, so every time it tried to surprise us with its erratic behavior, we could dodge or reposition ourselves. If we were even a bit slower, I shudder to think of the outcome."

Elrian's eyes widened, absorbing the wisdom his parents were imparting. "So, speed and agility aren't just for offense?"

Arlan laughed, "Exactly! In many cases, being fast and nimble can be the best defense. It allows you to evade, reposition, and even escape when the situation demands. Never underestimate the power of swift feet and quick thinking."

Lysandra smiled, her gaze gentle yet intense. "Always remember, Elrian, battles aren't just won with strength. They're won with wit, strategy, and sometimes, just the ability to move faster than your opponent."

Elrian's eyes lit up with a mix of excitement and wonder as he began to recount his own encounter. "Speaking of strange creatures, I too faced something unusual today." He paused, ensuring he had his parents' attention. "It was a snake, but not like any we've seen before. Barely the size of a needle, yet it shot towards me with such force that I felt as if I was being attacked by a creature many times its size."

Arlan and Lyssandra exchanged surprised glances, both intrigued by the description. "A needle-sized snake?" Arlan mused, trying to picture it.

Lyssandra leaned forward, her curiosity evident. "Tell us more."

Elrian nodded. "After I managed to defeat it, I decided to dissect it to better understand its anatomy." He hesitated, searching for the right words. "It was... mesmerizing. The snake's organs weren't like any typical snake. Its heart, for instance, was positioned at its center, surrounded by what looked like multiple layers of extremely thin muscles, almost like sheets."

He continued, "These muscles were intertwined in an intricate pattern, giving the snake the ability to move with explosive speed. Its skin wasn't just protective scales; there were minute openings that looked like they could shoot out pressurized air, perhaps aiding in its swift movements."

Arlan whistled softly, impressed. "Nature truly has its wonders."

Lyssandra, always the thoughtful one, pondered aloud, "This just goes to show how varied and diverse the world of creatures is. Every day, we're discovering something new, something we've never encountered before."

Elrian nodded in agreement. "It was an eye-opening experience. I realized that there's so much we don't know, so much left to explore and understand. Every creature, no matter how small, has its unique strengths and secrets."

The three of them sat in a moment of contemplative silence, each lost in thoughts of the vast, mysterious world around them.

Elrian glanced at the large snake-like creature his parents had brought back, curiosity evident in his eyes.

"Did you notice anything unusual when you dissected this creature?" he inquired, pointing towards the snake.

Arlan shook his head, "We haven't had the chance to open it up yet. We were running low on qi and felt it was best to head back home without delay."

Lyssandra added, "Given how it behaved during the fight, we thought it best to be cautious. We didn't want to take any unnecessary risks."

Elrian's gaze shifted between his parents and the creature, an idea forming in his mind. "What if we dissect it now? Together? It could provide us with valuable insights."

Arlan and Lyssandra exchanged glances, contemplating the proposal. After a brief pause, Lyssandra nodded, "It might be worth a shot. But let's be cautious. We don't know what this creature holds within."

As they began the meticulous process of dissecting the creature, the room was filled with a concentrated silence, punctuated only by the soft sounds of their tools and occasional whispered exchanges.

Arlan, with steady hands, made the first incision down the creature's underbelly. The skin, despite being snake-like, was tougher and had a moist, almost gelatinous texture which was uncharacteristic for snakes.

Lyssandra focused on the head, prying open the jaws to inspect the fangs. "These aren't just venom glands," she murmured, pointing to a set of sac-like structures nestled behind the fangs, "They seem to store water, or some kind of liquid. It's not just venom."

Elrian, working on the tail section, found chambers that were filled with a clear gel. "Look at this," he said, extracting a bit of the substance. It was viscous, and when he pressed it between his fingers, it became water-like. "It's like a concentrated form of water. This could explain its resilience and its affinity to water."

As they delved deeper, the creature's internal structure seemed even more mysterious. There was an extra organ, positioned close to the creature's heart, pulsating slowly. It was translucent and filled with the same clear gel Elrian had found earlier.

"This isn't normal," Arlan said, pointing to the organ. "It's like a secondary heart, but it seems to be pumping this liquid throughout its body. Perhaps it's what gives it its water-based abilities."

The creature's lungs were also different. Instead of a single pair, there were three, and they seemed to be interconnected in a way that allowed it to hold its breath for prolonged periods, possibly aiding in underwater hunting or evasion.

Lyssandra, examining the creature's eyes, found another anomaly. "The eyes have multiple retinas," she observed, "It must have had incredible vision, perhaps even able to see different spectrums."

Elrian, with wide-eyed fascination, said, "All these adaptations... It's like it was perfectly evolved for both land and water combat. Its anatomy is an intricate blend of both."

Arlan nodded, "Nature always finds a way to surprise us. This creature, with its unique anatomy and capabilities, is a testament to that."

The trio continued their examination, noting down their findings and discussing potential implications. The creature's hybrid anatomy was not just a biological marvel but also offered insights into the evolution and adaptability of life in their world. It was a learning experience for Elrian, and a reaffirmation for his parents that the world held mysteries that even seasoned hunters like them had yet to fully understand.
