Chapter 1 - Fading Reality

The relentless hum of the city outside was barely audible from Adham's dimly lit apartment. Stacks of unwashed dishes teetered precariously in the sink, and the heavy curtains, stained from years of neglect, were drawn tight, allowing only a sliver of the setting sun's orange glow to seep through.

Adham sat on the worn-out couch, his eyes vacant, staring at an old photograph in his hands. It was a picture of him with a group of friends, taken years ago when smiles came easily. But now, those friendships were lost to time, and the man in the photograph seemed like a stranger. His once-bright eyes now looked tired, weighed down by the shadows of betrayal and regret.

A knock at the door startled him. He hesitated for a moment, then rose to answer. Standing outside was Karim, an old acquaintance, his face etched with lines of concern.

"Adham, it's been weeks! Why haven't you answered any of my calls?" Karim's voice was edged with frustration.

Adham shrugged, avoiding eye contact. "Been busy."

Karim's eyes darted to the disarray in the apartment. "Is this what you call 'busy'?"

Adham's temper flared. "Why are you here, Karim?"

Karim sighed, rubbing his temples. "I heard about your job. And... I just wanted to check on you."

The mention of his recent job loss was a fresh wound. Adham clenched his fists. "I didn't need that job. And I don't need your pity."

"It's not pity, Adham! I'm worried about you. Everyone is! But you keep pushing everyone away."

Adham's voice cracked with emotion. "Maybe because everyone I've ever trusted has stabbed me in the back! Like you did."

Karim's face paled, memories of their shared past flooding back. "That was years ago, Adham. I've apologized countless times."

But Adham was not in the mood to rehash old wounds. "Just leave," he whispered, eyes glistening with unshed tears.

Karim hesitated, torn between wanting to help and respecting Adham's wishes. Finally, he nodded, his voice soft. "Take care of yourself, Adham."

Adham slammed the door behind him, the weight of loneliness pressing down. In a daze of anger and sadness, he grabbed his jacket and stormed out, not noticing the dark clouds gathering overhead.

Driving aimlessly, the events of the evening replayed in his mind. The city lights blurred as the rain began to pour, distorting his vision. Lost in his turmoil, Adham didn't see the truck skidding on the wet road towards him. There was a deafening crash, the world spun, and then everything went black.

When Adham opened his eyes, the familiar city lights were gone. Instead, he was surrounded by an eerie glow, and the ground beneath him felt... different. The reality he knew was fading, replaced by something wholly unfamiliar.
