Chapter 3 - Chapter Three: Before The Night Begins

Normal POV

Logan stepped into the school building, his senses immediately assaulted by the familiar scent of something reptilian—something that reminded him of snakes. He paused for a moment trying to recall where he'd encountered that smell before but with a mind cluttered by centuries of memories the specific recollection eluded him. With a low growl of frustration Logan dismissed the scent and continued down the hallway his boots echoing on the polished floors.

As he entered his classroom Logan set about preparing for the day's lesson his hands moved on autopilot, arranging the chalk and opening the textbook for today's lesson to the appropriate page.

His thoughts were still lingering on that odd scent, a nagging feeling gnawing at the back of his mind, but he had a class to teach and he wasn't about to let a memory slip interfere with his routine.

Time began to pass and eventually the students began to file in one by one taking their seats and pulling out their materials.

Without wasting much time Logan began giving his lecture this time on World War Two, Adolf Hitler, the treatments of the Jewish people, and of course Japan's alliance with the Nazi's.

However halfway through his lecture Logan's caught the unmistakable sound of Shinji Matou's voice, dripping with his usual slimy arrogance as he flirted with a group of girls.

Logan's patience was beginning to wear thin almost instantly since he was doing all of this work yet this little shit thought he was too good for school, his irritation began to manifest itself as a slow low rumble in his chest.

Without looking up from the chalkboard Logan grabbed a piece of chalk and hurled it with pinpoint accuracy at Shinji's head. The chalk struck with a satisfying thud causing the boy to let out a high-pitched shriek that echoed through the classroom "ahhhhhh!!! My head!" he shouted, grabbing his forehead.

The other students burst into laughter and Logan's scowl deepened "pay attention when I'm teaching Matou," Logan growled, his voice cutting through the laughter like a knife "you can go flirt around and boast your ego to compensate yourself for your little seaweed dick later," he continued.

Shinji's face turned beet red, a mix of embarrassment and humiliation washing over him "h-hai sensei," he mumbled out. The laughter around the room swelled but Logan wasn't amused, not even in the slightest he swiftly turned his gaze on the rest of the class causing them to go silent with a slight flinch.

"The fuck are you little shitheads laughing about?" Logan snarled, his voice like gravel "don't think I don't see some of you using your phones while I'm lecturing. Take out your history textbooks now and turn to page three hundred and ninety-four! For the remaining hour, you're all going to take notes."

With a huff Logan moved back to his desk slipping on a pair of reading glasses as he began grading some assignments. The classroom fell into an uneasy silence the only sounds being the scratch of pens on paper and the occasional rustle of pages turning.

"I've finished, sensei," came the cool collected voice of Rin Tohsaka. Logan looked up from his grading and there it was again—that familiar scent. It reminded him of steel mixed with blood and fire similar to what he often picked up from that Emiya kid.

Logan's gaze lingered on the area near Rin, not noticing the slight tension in her shoulders. Without another word, he grabbed her notebook and gave a grunt toward the door "good work as always...you're dismissed kid."

Rin gave a small nod before leaving the classroom, the familiar scent of steel lingering in Logan's thoughts for a moment longer. However, the day pressed on and soon Logan found himself buried in grading once more.

Unfortunately the steady rhythm of his work was abruptly ruined when his door slammed open revealing the one person Logan could barely tolerate Taiga Fujimura.

Logan inwardly groaned as she bounded into the room, her voice a shrill contrast to the peace he'd been enjoying "yooo, Logan!!" she called out with far too much enthusiasm then any normal person should have.

"What do you want, Fujimura?" Logan mumbled, not bothering to look up from the stack of papers on his desk. Taiga, unfazed by his lack of enthusiasm, planted her hands on his desk with a loud thud.

"Listen here, Logan! I've been hearing that you've been swearing and yelling at your students again for the past week! You seriously need to change your work eth—"

Logan tuned her out, letting her rant wash over him like background noise. He continued grading, his mind wandering back to more pressing matters. That is, until Taiga suddenly screamed right in his ear, causing him to jump up "ARE YOU EVEN LISTENING TO ME?! HELLO, ANYONE IN THERE?!"

Feeling his frustration boil over especially after a night of restless sleep Logan had finally reached his limit. Without thinking he reached out and grabbed Taiga by the face, silencing her mid-rant. Her shrill voice was cut off as she let out a muffled squeak of surprise.

"Just shut the hell up already, Fujimura. You're getting on my nerves," Logan growled, his voice low and dangerous almost like a wolf. Without giving her a chance to protest he lifted her slightly off the ground and marched her out of his classroom. Then with a swift yet comical kick to her rear he sent her sprawling across the hallway floor with the door slamming shut behind her.

Taiga sat up with an exaggerated pout rubbing her sore backside as she glared at the closed door "Wahhhhahahah!! Logan-sensei you hurt my butt! I'm telling Kuzuki-sensei about this!" she whined loudly enough for anyone nearby to hear.

"Go right ahead," Logan called back through the door his tone utterly indifferent "I couldn't give two shits less."

Finally the classroom was quiet once more Logan let out a sigh of relief, his shoulders relaxing as he leaned back in his chair.

The peace was short-lived though, as he glanced at the stack of ungraded papers still piled high on his desk. He let out a huff of annoyance pulling out a cigar and lighting it up with a practiced flick of his lighter.

As he inhaled the familiar smoke he muttered to himself "I'm getting too old for this shit," he took a long drag of his cigar savoring the brief moment of calm before exhaling a plume of smoke.

You would think he would have been expelled for his behavior but with a few favors and a little thre-cough I mean black mail he was able to keep his job at the school rather permanently despite the complaints.

Meanwhile outside the classroom a few passing students had witnessed the entire commotion. They exchanged sympathetic glances feeling a pang of pity for Fujimura-sensei. Everyone knew she'd been trying to catch Logan's attention since he started teaching at Homurahara but her efforts had always been in vain. Logan just wasn't interested—not in the slightest.

Logan took another puff of his cigar letting the smoke curl around his fingers as he stared at the mountain of paperwork "looks like I'll have to pull an all nighter again," and with that he got to work again.
