Charlotte and her parents were seated at the dining table, having dinner, there was an awkward silence before her Father broke the silence.
"I heard what happened at your school today," Mr. Bennett said, he was eerily calm, but Charlotte knew it was calm before the storm.
"Father, I--I lost control for a while there, I think..."
"You think what, That I'm pushing too hard?!" Me Bennett said, slamming his spoon on the table.
'Aish, this man, and his fucking temper!' She complained inwardly, her Father was the type that provided anything she wanted but he had a big temper and only seemed perfect on the outside when they were with people.
"Honey, don't you think we're pushing her too much, you're always forcing her to cultivate, her body is too fragile for that much power," Jenefer, Her mother said, backing her.
"Shut the fuck up!" He yelled and they both clamped their mouths shut. Charlotte carried her hand to rest on her mother's own.
"I wanted a male child and you gave me a girl, what choice do I have then to train her to become more powerful? In this life, power is everything!!" Mike said and left the table angrily.
"Why does he hate me?" Charlotte asked her mother with tears evident in her eyes.
Jenifer was silent, she couldn't lie to her daughter that her father loved her because he had proven to her that he didn't love her more than once, and here he was ranting on and on about how he wanted a son instead of a daughter right in front of their only child. So instead she just caressed her daughter's hair with a sigh while Charlotte rested on her shoulders.
After dinner, Charlotte went to the spacious backyard where she had her campfire party some days ago. She was in a yoga outfit, a grey singlet, and a knee-length red tight, her hair was packed in a ponytail and she was wearing white sneakers.
She did some warm-up, jumping up and down while swinging her arms after that she balled her first and then closed her eyes, mustering her powers, electricity crackled and danced around her body, there were a bunch of streetlights in the spacious backyard of the mansion, about ten and with her eyes closed she tried to absorb the electricity in all those lampposts.
The electricity from the streetlight was drawn to her like a magnet and they started to pass into her body. The electricity in her body began to crackle even more, too much that she could handle. She bit her lower lip and tried to take all of it and after absorbing nine streetlights she tried absorbing the tenth one but it was like a limit.
The electricity in her body became more intense and after absorbing the tenth streetlight electricity, her body became like a ticking bomb that was about to blow so she discharged all those volts in the air.
Charlotte collapsed on the ground panting hard, this was harder than she thought, but at least she managed to absorb the tenth lamppost. A smile broke out on her lips as she kept on sweating profusely.
"You are trying too hard," Jenefer said, coming from inside the mansion with a tray of milk and cookies.
"I have to Mother, that's the only way I can get Father to love me," Charlotte said with a pained smile.
"Your power isn't something to tamper with my love, it can destroy you if you try too hard," Jenefer said, sitting on the grass that Charlotte laid on.
"If that's the only way Father is going to love me, if I push the self-destruct button, then so be it," Charlotte said again, trying to sound humourous but ended up getting a slap on the shoulder from her mother.
"Ah, Mother, I was just joking," She said, holding her shoulders.
"Then don't talk like that," Jeneffer said.
"Aish, Mom my shoulders hurt!" She said again with a pout.
"Mother, I managed to absorb the tenth one today," She said, pointing at the tenth lamppost.
"I heard you channeled from lightning today for a defense course?" Jennefer asked and she nodded.
"You should have seen the way they looked at me Mother, like I was some kind of monster, and I did feel like one, it was like my power took over for a short while, I unknowingly channeled lightning, Mother," Charlotte said explaining what happened at the defense class.
"Who told you guys about that, was it Teacher Davis, cause he seemed impressed when I did that and he's gonna look two-faced if he was the one that called to complain..."
"...it was your friends, Cassie and Danielle," Jeneffer said, cutting Char off.
"Tsh, so it was those bitches, and they're not my friends, just my wannabes," Charlotte said flipping her ponytail.
"You shouldn't refer to them as your wannabes, they might get upset," Jennefer said.
"No Mother, they told me they wanna be me," Char said and her mother nodded with an 'o'.
"What about Liam, your boyfriend," Jeneffer asked, taking a bite out of a cookie.
"He was the one Teacher Davis assigned to defend, and he--he's not my boyfriend," Charlotte said rolling her eyes.
"Why, he's hot, handsome, also freaking powerful and he likes you," Jeneffer said.
"I don't know, but he's not my type," Charlotte said.
"What's your type then?"
"I like...I like--I honestly don't know, I haven't thought about it," She said.
"Hmmm, it takes a while before you realize what you want, you never realize what you want until it's gone, my love," Jeneffer said and stood up to leave.
Charlotte thought about her mother's words, but she had known Liam for years and she hadn't felt anything for him. Nope, Liam was not her type. And it was going to stay that way until he crushed Ranella's heart. That bitch was so full of herself despite being an ugly duckling.
