Chapter 38 - Ch 38: The academy [pt1]

Emily was stumped after Rachael asked this question. She was not allowed to send Rachael away, but who would care?

If she provided frequent care for Rachael and reported her actions to her master, no one could speak to her.

Emily also had an excuse ready. She just needed to remind people that Rachael's school had been destroyed and no other school allowed late transfers. This boarding school was the only place she could find at such short notice.

"You do not need to worry about permission or what would happen to me. Just pack our stuff up and be ready tomorrow."

Rachael did not have any more questions to ask. Emily had decided what she wanted to do. And there was nothing that could sway from this track. Rachael decided to finish what she was doing and spent the day packing.

She did not have much stuff, so the only packing she needed to do was filtering what she did not need to take with her.

Rachael finished packing by dinner time and had a restful sleep. And the next day, she was wide awake early in the morning. She walked down, only to see Emily waiting for her.

"You are ready? Good! Let's head out now."

Emily opened the door and pulled up Rachael's luggage. This was a pleasant surprise for Rachael, but Emily did not think much of it.

Since this was the last day she had to take care of Rachael, Emily decided to be kind to Rachael and accompany her.

The boarding school was nowhere, and the taxi driver hesitated to take them along. But Emily won the taxi driver over with money and headed toward the school.

From the outside, the school had a military look. The concrete walls and barbed fencing gave the school a prison-like look.

No sane person would want to put their kid in such a facility. But Emily ignored it all and got out of the taxi.

"Ah, you people must be hardcore members of the family who want to join this facility early. Usually, the only kids who come here are 12 and above awakened children. Is this child a genius?"

The taxi driver asked while looking at Rachael. He was surprised to see such a calm and well-behaved kid. Others he had driven around usually cried or made demands.

He had high hopes for Rachael's future, but Emily dashed all his hopes.

"This stupid girl and a genius? Don't be ridiculous. I am sending her to a boarding school so that she can get rid of her stupidity. I don't want her around me."

Emily felt safe to say this to an unknown taxi driver. She wanted to complain and get all the frustration off her chest. But this was the only way to achieve that.

The taxi driver had seen many people during his time, so he was not shocked when Emily said such words.

But he did look at Rachael with a pity-filled expression.

"Rachael, get out of the taxi already. We need to head in before the starting ceremony starts."

Emily reminded Rachael and dragged her out. She gave the taxi driver the sum they had agreed upon, and the taxi driver drove off without looking back.

"This place could be a substitute for a prison story. How did you even find a school like this, Emily?"

Rachael looked at the walls, and the clean look of this building surprised her. She had been expecting any place found by Emily to be cheap and useless. She did not know that this place would look half decent to her.

'Tsk, I guess Emily can be helpful at times. She found this place which is away from people's eyes. I can grow my business here.'

Rachael and Emily crossed the front gate, and a guard immediately stopped them from moving further. The guard uniform was neat and professional. His posture was without any fault, and he was well-trained.

"Excuse me, but civilians are not allowed past this point. State the purpose of your visit and the one you want to meet. Do you have a scheduled meeting?"

The guard asked these questions in quick succession. His presence made Emily nervous, and she stuttered.

"I…this is…I did not…."

Emily was at a loss for words. She was not sure what she should do here.

Luckily, she had Rachael with her. Rachael knew what she was doing. She stepped forward and looked the guard right in the eyes.

"I was accepted here. We were called to complete the process. Emily, you have the acceptance papers, right? Hand it to the guard."

Emily snapped out of her daze and quickly took the papers in her bag.

The guard took the papers, but not before he gave Emily a suspicious look. The guard was also interested in Rachael but dismissed her as a child.

"Let me see what your papers say."

The guard did not believe Rachael and Emily at first. A lot of people came here to try to fool him.

But the more he read the papers, his tension eased away. The guard was completely relaxed when he handed these papers back to Emily.

"Everything looks alright on my end. I have checked all your papers, and they all seem in order. As per protocol, I will accompany you both inside. If you have any questions, please ask me."

The guard looked genuine about wanting to help. But there was a feeling inside Rachael that said she should not trust this guard or anyone she met in the facility unless she had proof that they could be trusted.

But Emily had been bought over by a kind smile and a beautiful face. She was already red and love-struck.

The guard led them through the hallways, and Rachael noticed him typing on his phone in between them. She was not sure what he was doing, but he seemed to be reporting his findings.

It took them far too long to reach the principal's front door. The guard knocked at the door, and it opened quickly.

The principal had a fake smile when he looked up and quickly welcomed the pair in. The principal also gestured for the guard to go out and bring refreshments.

"You both! There is no need to be shy and stand around. Hurry and sit down. I will ask someone to bring us refreshments. Is there anything you are allergic to?"

The principal asked with a pale face. He looked at Emily for a few seconds before focusing on Rachael. That did not sit well with Emily, and she quickly coughed to gain the principal's attention.

"I am not allergic to anything, sir. And I have to say, your room looks incredible. How long have you been working to gather all this wealth? Indeed, you must feel lonely sometimes. If you want, I can keep you company."

Emily tried to make a pass at the principal. But in her defense, the principal looked young. The man was likely in his late 30s, and his clothes were branded and well-made.

Emily's open flirting took aback the principal. He had never seen anyone this shameless and open before. It annoyed the principal, but he contained his anger inside.

'If not for that notification from young master Elias, I would never have allowed such low-lives to enter our academy grounds.'

The principal had a low opinion of Emily, and his impression also extended to Rachael. It was another fault, but the principal could not help himself.

It was not easy to change human nature, and people generally resembled those they lived with.

Rachael might not be a bad kid, but Emily influenced her and must be watched.

"I am afraid I would have to decline your offer, Miss Emily. I am happily married, and my wife would be crossed with me if I keep another company."

Emily looked uncomfortable at the mention of a wife. She did not mind being a mistress, but the principal looked uncomfortable at her intentions. That made Emily back away and calm down.

"Ah, I was just joking around with you. What is a little joke between friends? Anyway, we are not here for that, right? We are here to get Rachael admitted into this school. All I wish is for you to teach her some discipline."

Emily pretended to be a concerned mother, and her voice sounded genuine. But the only one she was fooling herself.

The principal wanted nothing more than to send Emily away. The fastest way to ensure this would be to follow the entry procedure.

'Talking to the mother already sapped my energy. I do not want to make it worse by talking to the daughter as well.'

The principal did not want to do anything. However, he was forced to follow his role and quickly decided to conduct the test.

"Miss, can you head out for a few minutes? I need to interview with your daughter alone. This is the standard procedure, so please follow it."

The principal made it clear what Emily needed to do. But Emily was still hesitant to follow his orders. She wanted to sit inside and try to impress the principal more.

But the longer she took to get up, the harder she was glared at.

In the end, Emily realized she was not doing herself any favor by staying behind, so she decided to head out.

"Rachael, behave yourself. And try not to disappoint me. I know it is hard for you to do, but keep yourself in check."

Emily did not go out without speaking her mind. The principal was shocked at her behavior.

'Don't parents usually try to showcase their child's best behavior and abilities during these tests? Does she want her daughter to fail this exam? I cannot get a read on this woman.'

The principal felt an incoming headache. He felt relieved once Emily was out of the room. But then he had to face Rachael, and he tensed up again.

"Don't try to overthink Emily and her behavior. She is not trying to trick you but is always like this. You will give yourself a headache if you try to find her motives because she doesn't have any apart from what she has shown you until now."
