Chapter 35 - Old Friends, New Rivals

The stadium was abuzz with excitement. It was just a friendly match, but the energy in the air was palpable. Manchester United was set to face Valencia, and while the result wouldn't affect any league standings, pride was on the line.

Liam laced up his boots, his mind drifting back to his academy days. Valencia's star midfielder was none other than Alex, his former roommate, confidant, and partner-in-crime during their time together. Their paths had diverged after the academy, with Alex making a name for himself in the Spanish La Liga, while Liam pursued his dreams in the Premier League.

As Liam stepped onto the pitch for warm-ups, he spotted Alex on the opposite side. Their eyes met, and a shared grin crossed their faces. The bond they had forged during their academy days was unbreakable, but today, they were rivals.

The referee's whistle signaled the start of the match. From the onset, it was clear that both teams were taking this "friendly" very seriously. The pace was frenetic, with both sides creating chances.

Liam and Alex found themselves in several one-on-one situations. In one memorable instance, Liam, with the ball at his feet, tried to dribble past Alex. A swift move to the left, then a feint to the right, but Alex anticipated it, cleanly stealing the ball and leaving Liam smiling in admiration.

As the match progressed, the playful banter between the two was evident. They teased, challenged, and even shared a few laughs, much to the amusement of the fans. But amidst the camaraderie, their competitive spirits shone brightly.

In the 78th minute, with the score level at 1-1, Liam found himself with a golden opportunity. A perfectly timed pass from a teammate left him one-on-one with Valencia's goalkeeper. But, out of nowhere, Alex came sliding in, deflecting the ball just enough to send it wide of the post. Liam looked up, a mix of frustration and appreciation in his eyes, while Alex winked cheekily.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw, but the result was secondary. As the final whistle blew, Liam and Alex met at the center circle, embracing tightly. The crowd, recognizing the special bond between the two, erupted in applause.

In the tunnel post-match, they exchanged jerseys, a tradition in football symbolizing respect. "You've come a long way since our academy days," Alex whispered to Liam, his voice filled with pride.

Liam smiled, "So have you. But remember, the next time we meet, I won't be so forgiving on the pitch."

They laughed, knowing that while they might be rivals on the field, off it, their bond was stronger than ever.
