Chapter 1 - 1 Independent Life

Waking up in my freezing bedroom with heavy rain pouring down along the window sill. My phone alarm rang, looking at the time with my squinting eyes. It is 5:30am and I gotta get ready for work. All week it's been raining and we are in the Fall season, meaning more cool to freezing temperatures. With mostly wet and windy weather to come. Today is September 23, 2021

I just moved into a new place yesterday with sealed boxes neatly scattered in the apartment. The apartment has 2 rooms, the dining room and living room as one open space. With separate toilet and shower rooms on one side. A small place across the main room is where the laundry room is. Plus a medium size patio that I don't know what to do yet.

I moved from my parents place from the countryside, to a more near cityside area. A place called Seatvil city in the North-west region, where it rains 90 percent of the time across the 4 seasons. In which it lies near the vast Adundrael Sea. It's a place where most creatures like demi humans also live with us. They are welcomed in many places around the world and some they aren't. Only a few main places they are allowed to enter and thrive.

My sister Claire, is among them as a Cat girl. Our parents have a certain relationship that many humans consider to be "unnatural". But their glaring eyes and hatred words can't take their love away. My dad is human and mom is a cat woman, started with a long story that ended up fine with two girls. I turn the tv on and watch an anchor man speak.

Here live on the Royal 5 news, I'm your host Tom Bly. For today's news we have a spokesman that will talk about, "Are demi humans, more humans or are they more animals?"

An older man named Acosta Dune, is against the demi-humans rights that's quite new by a decade. He gets up to a podium with a paper in front of him, "In today's reality, it's hard for them to rise up as independent species with freedom like us humans. They may act, walk, talk and even eat like us humans. But I'm judging them not on those aspects, no. But based on their animal instinct of "urges" if you will. Over the past century demi humans have entered our world and have bred with many demi-humans and humans. Our food demand is so high, that we have gone below the food shortage level from five years before. In our region it used to be 89.5%, to now 57.2% in a ten year span. Before they came we were alright, but now we a revolutionizing city can't even support our own people. Unemployment has risen once again and is now affecting 1/200 people, since these demi-humans came about."

As the anchor tries to move the topic toward a more friendlier subject. Dune just shouts and blurts out information, to a point where the channel went to a commercial. I was really hurt by that considering I have a family and friends who are demi-humans. I received a message from my sister saying, "do you mind if I crash at your place tonight, some weirdo's have been lurking around my place, thanks Sis."

I sent a "k" reply and got ready to work. At work no demi-humans and pets are allowed here. The company has a strict policy about that. The manager is not so nice and my coworkers are too. All hate on those that care and support demi-humans and pets. Of course some disagree as they have pets and demi-humans in their family. It's safe to go along and not be targeted. If you have any relations with them, you'd be fired and it's hard to get a job in this city. When the governor and mayor allowed demi-humans to work among humans in this state.

After working for many hours in my small office cubicle, my boss calls me to his office. As I entered, I got goosebumps and chills on my spine.

He is an obese middle aged man, weighing 720 pounds in his 60's, who has had a stroke and heart attack. He's wearing a greasy white tank top, with his business shirt over his shoulder with a tie on his forehead. He stuffs his face with greasy burgers and fries, two milk shakes and sodas, with a bottle of red wine on a table behind him with a ton of potato chips. Manager Walter, aka Walrus.

As I sit on the chair he talks with his mouth full, as he's continuing his lunch time by an extra two hours. "Sylvia, my most lo-loyal worker in this department. For nearly f-five years, you have worked, hmm." As he drinks and rests for a bit, he heaves out his breath as if he had run 20 steps. "Excuse me, my stomach was still hungry back then, I'd called you here regarding our policy. After some background research supported by my boss, you have a family history of, half… humans?"

"Yes sir, I do have a family with demi-humans. Am I fired by chance?"

"Well our policy does not accept animal beings in our company, you have a sister a bit younger in your age, no?"

"I do have a sister, but how is this related to work?"

"You see my faithful friend, I am a part of an organization that deals with creatures, more like we send them to a place that's more... ideal to them."

"You want me to turn in my little sister, to you for "you" to sell her off a place?!"

"Uh, let's not put it that way Sylvia, that may sound exactly what is planned. But do trust the next running up president Acosta Dune information. Look at me, it takes about six meals and some snacks for me to be sated of the day. Food is crucial for a country to thrive and even for me, to pay my workers I need to live."

I shook my head in disbelief and grabbed a milkshake from his desk. From there I threw it at his face and he looked at me in such a shock. I grabbed the expensive wine from his desk and left work.

Knowing that I just quit my job at that moment. I shopped for some dinner meals and some desserts for my sister's visit. From there in the late afternoon I went to check the mail. I got a letter with a red wax seal on a black ribbon. When I entered my home, I put the mail on the kitchen counter. I cleaned a bit, made dinner and prepared for a sleepover.

The door knocked and I opened the door for my sister screaming in joy. We both screamed and hugged as it's been a few years since we last saw each other.

"Sylvia, it has been too long," Claire said.

"Well at least you're here and safe," I said
