Chapter 52 - Tasks

"Ah!"

"What's wrong?!"

"The government seems to be searching for people."

"What? They're hiring?"

"But isn't it normally through all those complicated steps?"

"I'm not sure. But I still won't let this chance go."

People began crowding the government area as Hao Yu posted the recruitment. Even if he wanted to go around and look for people, he didn't know where to go. So, he thought about getting a few people and recruiting them. After some time, he would ask for their recommendation to expand the division.

As expected, because it was a special division, there weren't a lot of steps to apply, causing the people to be interested. In just a single day, he actually got at least fifty people lining up.

However, Hao Yu wasn't in the building just yet. He was actually visiting Leng Xiu.

"So, how is it going? To think you would choose to post a recruitment." Leng Xiu smirked.

"Yes. In the end, I don't know how this city works and have no connections. I'll use these people to help me to fix those two problems." Hao Yu nodded silently, assuring him that he would handle this matter carefully.

"Fair enough. Anyway, these are your tasks." Leng Xiu handed him a scroll.

Hao Yu squinted his eyes while opening the scroll. There were a lot of tasks, but he had seen most of them such as constructing the dam and managing the resources. He also found the amount of money that he could use to recruit people.

"It's quite big, huh?" Hao Yu muttered.

"Yes. With that fund, you should be able to recruit about twenty people, right?"

"Enough." Hao Yu agreed and focused on the few tasks he hadn't seen before.

Special Administrator Hao Yu is required to fix the problem in the East District regarding the conflict between merchants and residents.

Special Administrator Hao Yu shall fix the west area where the slums are located.

Special Administrator Hao Yu has to inspect and create a plan for the brothel in the south district.

"These three tasks…." Hao Yu's face turned grim. "I don't think it suits the original purpose of my special division, right?"

"If you're talking about the brothel, I want you to go there because I've heard a lot of weird things. Even the South District Administrator is perplexed about it. So, I want an independent division to take care of it since you might see something different. I've gotten the administrator's agreement, so you could simply go to him to get his cooperation."

"Then, what about this slum thing… How do you want me to handle it? You're not going to tell me to push them away, right?"

"You can do whatever you want. Even if I want to help the beggar, I know it's not possible. Hence, you can think of anything to fix that problem even just for a little. It doesn't need to be completed, I just want a better place."

"I understand the gist of it." Hao Yu pointed at the last matter. "How about this conflict?"

"Oh that? The merchants are raising the price for all kinds of reasons. They might take advantage of the fact that we're rich because of the mine. But it has become a problem for the common people."

"I see. It seems to be the easiest one to solve. After recruiting the first batch of staff, I'll visit that place." Hao Yu maintained his calm expression as though the problems were easy to handle.

"Alright. Other than that, you just have to go around the city and try to make an improvement. If it's a big project, you report directly back to me. If it's a small project, just talk to the respective administrators. I have advised them to help you if they think your plan is worth trying."

Leng Xiu added the last part to warn Hao Yu that if he made a random suggestion, the administrators wouldn't agree. In fact, Leng Xiu would definitely hear about it.

In other words, this was Leng Xiu's way of keeping Hao Yu in check.

"You don't have to worry. I'll be serious as long as the other party also considers my opinion seriously. If they don't, then you can forget about it." Hao Yu wasn't scared of the warning and assured Leng Xiu. In fact, he was the one warning Leng Xiu that if the administrators didn't cooperate with him, he wouldn't do anything for the city.

"Alright. You've got a deal. You can use the first day to recruit people or inspect the city. Go talk to the people and merchants the next day."

"That's right, Sir. What about the cultivators' reactions regarding the dam project?"

"They were delighted to know that they would have a cultivation place, rich in Spiritual Qi. I have a plan to meet them again in three days, so I'll call you later to accompany me."

"Understood."

"Is that all?"

"Yes, Sir." Hao Yu cupped his hands before leaving the room with the scroll. It had been a long time since Hao Yu could fight a cultivator, and the reminder he received yesterday had made his blood boil.

It seemed that he could finally see the opportunity to kill another cultivator or even multiple of them.

There were a lot of cultivators stationed in the north, so he was looking forward to how he could eliminate them.

When he returned to his office, Hao Yu could see at least seventy people lining up outside the building.

"When are we going to enter?"

"Who is this special administrator?"

"I don't know. But I heard it's an administrator from another city that Sir Magistrate personally recruited."

Hao Yu saw numerous men wearing neat and fancy clothes. At first glance, he could see that they were scholars. However, most of their expressions were not to his liking since they were likely the stubborn scholars who couldn't even listen to their direct superior.

The moment they began to be tired of waiting, Hao Yu walked past them as though he was skipping the line.

"Heyy—!" One of them wanted to stop him since he looked like he was going to enter. He grabbed Hao Yu's clothes as if warning him not to skip the lines.

Fortunately, it didn't escalate to a big problem as Old Si had come out and found him. "Welcome back, Sir. We're ready to begin the interview."
