Chapter 1 - Prologue

I was the most popular student at East Wing High School, excelling in academics, leading as class president, and shining in the glee club. With my beautiful brown skin, hair, and eyes, I stood out among the crowd. Not to mention, I was incredibly wealthy, like a billionaire. However, beneath the surface, my life was far from perfect. I lost my mom to cancer at a young age, and my dad became consumed by work, leaving me feeling neglected. Despite my material possessions, I was labeled as a spoiled brat by others, and middle school became a battleground where I was bullied for my intelligence and wealth.

Teachers never had my back when I was bullied. They didn't like me because I knew stuff they didn't. They even accused me of cheating when I aced tests. I mean, come on, making seven even is as simple as removing the 's'. It's basic logic! I think the teachers hated me because they felt insulted when I corrected them. Things got worse, and I had to be homeschooled by top-notch tutors. But that meant I had zero friends. I was always cooped up at home, and even when I tried hanging out with old friends, they ignored me because they were from my old middle school. It was tough.

After begging my dad for a solid two years, he finally gave in and let me go back to a regular school. It was such a relief!

Walking into Eagle Wing High School on my first day, I was filled with a mix of nervousness and anticipation. The students around me seemed engrossed in their own worlds, barely noticing my presence. As I navigated through my classes, I quickly grasped the unspoken rules of fitting in: mirroring the actions of my peers, avoiding any behavior that would make me stand out, and politely chuckling at the teachers' attempts at humor. It was a simple formula for blending in and finding my place in the school's social fabric.

During lunch, I found myself sitting alone when a girl named Maya approached me. She exuded kindness and warmth, and we quickly formed a deep connection. Maya's carefree nature and ability to bring joy to others through her infectious laughter was truly remarkable. Her unique sense of style, with her preference for skirts and crop tops, added to her individuality. Despite our contrasting appearances, our friendship blossomed, showcasing the beauty of acceptance and the depth of her inner kindness.

Life took an unexpected turn as I found myself occupying the reserved spot for the cool and popular kids in both the cafeteria and the classroom. The admiration and adoration from my peers led me to run for class president, and to my delight, I emerged victorious. Embracing my love for singing, I auditioned for the glee club and was ecstatic to be elected as its president. The attention from potential suitors and the desire to emulate my popularity from fellow girls was overwhelming. However, amidst the whirlwind of popularity, I made sure to prioritize and nurture my friendship with Maya, reminding her that our bond was unbreakable, transcending the superficial world of popularity.

Maya's surprisingly positive response allowed me to make her feel valued and appreciated. With the generous monthly allowance provided by my father, I took the opportunity to indulge in shopping sprees with Maya, creating memorable experiences together. Admittedly, the allure of popularity captivated me, and I was determined to maintain my status. To assert my prominence, I invested in personalized t-shirts bearing my name and strategically promoted them throughout the school. The impact was profound, as students began to show deference and detractors found themselves silenced by the unwavering support I had garnered. It was during this time that I encountered Cassie, a fellow individual of influence, whose popularity stemmed from her role as an Instagram influencer. Our connection blossomed into a friendship, forming a trio with Maya, despite her reservations.

I, Maya and Cassie continued our unbreakable friendship, navigating the twists and turns of life with unwavering support. While the longing for my mother lingered, I treasured a tiny picture frame holding memories of our family. It was my trusty companion, safely tucked away in my backpack, reminding me of the love we shared. When Cassie suggested friendship bracelets, Maya scoffed, thinking we were too grown-up for such things. But I found it adorable and cool, so I suggested a more mature twist - matching phone cases. Because who says you can't be classy and fun at the same time?

Cassie and I were excited about matching phone cases, but Maya didn't share the same enthusiasm. It was a bit frustrating because it seemed like she wasn't enjoying anything lately. When we suggested a sleepover, she called it "babyish," and when I mentioned going to the amusement park, she said she hadn't been there since she was 8. Despite Maya's preferences, I still had a great time with Cassie. Friendship always comes first, right?

Wrong. Maya's behavior was becoming increasingly bothersome, and it eventually led to a significant argument between us. As a result, we practically didn't communicate for almost two weeks. However, thanks to Cassie's intervention, we were able to reconcile and resolve our differences. We had a heartfelt conversation and embraced, putting the conflict behind us. It's remarkable how open communication and understanding can mend strained relationships.

Life was starting to get nice but it took a wild turn.....
