Yuro awoke with a start, momentarily disoriented as his eyes scanned the unfamiliar room. It took him a few seconds to realize he was in a dormitory, and on a bunk bed no less. Glancing down, he noticed his outfit had changed—a slick, athletically woven black suit, tailored to fit him perfectly, reminiscent of a scuba diver's attire. Across his chest, a bold "R" for Ragnarok was emblazoned.
He gingerly swung his legs over the side of the bed and stood up. The second his feet touched the ground, the door slid open with a mechanical swish, and Ryuya walked in. His eyes met Yuro's, and a half-smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.
"Look who's finally awake," Ryuya said, chuckling. "Did you have a good nap after our little skirmish?"
Yuro smirked back. "Well, if you call getting my ass handed to me by some new combat move a 'skirmish,' then yes, I had a wonderful nap."
Ryuya laughed, his eyes narrowing playfully. "Fair enough. You'll be pleased to know that I've been appointed as your initial trainer."
"Trainer for what, exactly?"
"Ah, where do I start? You see, you're now a host to one of the most powerful forms of Genous—Dark Matter. I've been briefed on its capabilities. Its chief attribute, one you'll find yourself using frequently, is gravity manipulation."
Yuro's eyebrows shot up. "Gravity manipulation?"
"Indeed. But before you get too excited, know that you can only manipulate your own gravity, at least for now. It sounds limiting, but the implications are vast. Picture this—altering the gravitational pull on yourself to make your movements faster than an opponent can react. Or increasing your gravitational weight to lend devastating power to your strikes. The possibilities are virtually endless."
As Ryuya spoke, Yuro found himself caught up in the potential his new abilities promised. "How would that even work? Would I be able to fly?"
Ryuya shook his head. "Not fly, per se. But you could reduce your own gravity to leap incredible distances, or increase it to anchor yourself against strong forces. The idea is to seamlessly integrate these manipulations into your existing combat style. So you won't be just an average martial artist or just a Genous user. You'll be a formidable synthesis of both."
Yuro's head was spinning with the flood of new information. "This is a lot to take in. Where do we start?"
"We start with control," Ryuya said. "First, you'll go through a series of tests to gauge how well you can control your gravity manipulation. Once you have a handle on that, we'll put you up against various Genous users within Ragnarok. You'll need to adapt your newfound abilities in real combat situations, understand the limits and extents of what you can do."
Yuro nodded, feeling a mixture of anticipation and nervousness. Ryuya's words offered a glimpse of the future, and it was overwhelmingly exciting, yet fraught with challenges.
"Make no mistake, Yuro," Ryuya continued, his voice dropping a notch, his eyes locking onto Yuro's, "your true strength will always be in your combat prowess. The gravity manipulation is an enhancement, a tool. Our goal is to make those two aspects of you work together to create a warrior the Zen Empire has never seen before."
The air in the room seemed to thicken with the gravity of Ryuya's statement, and Yuro felt a chill run down his spine. For the first time, the full scope of what lay ahead of him became frighteningly clear.
Just as Yuro was about to ask another question, Ryuya looked at his wrist-mounted device. "Ah, it looks like it's time. Your first test is about to begin."
"My first test? Now?"
Ryuya grinned, a twinkle in his eye. "Welcome to Ragnarok, Yuro. Time to see if you can pull your own weight, both literally and figuratively."
And with that ambiguous cliffhanger, Ryuya turned and strode out of the room, leaving Yuro alone with his thoughts, his anticipation, and an uncanny sense that his life was about to change forever.
