Her dark eyes bore into his. "If you want even the smallest semblance of control over your abilities, you'll have to start by understanding the primary negative emotions—anger, fear, and sadness. They're the roots of everything you're dealing with."

Gray's jaw clenched as her words sank in. The path ahead of him wasn't just dangerous—it was treacherous. Yet, the truth she revealed was one he couldn't ignore.

The tar woman's voice echoed faintly, amusement lacing her tone. "What are you to do? It's simple. If a child fears the dark, you throw them into it until they learn it's just shadows. If they fear a snake, you place them before one until they can slay it." 

Gray opened his mouth to retort, but he didn't have the chance. The tar beneath them rippled and split, revealing a yawning abyss. Before he could react, her dark, liquid hands shoved him forward. As he fell, her voice chased after him, resounding like a thunderclap in every direction.
