Chapter 167 - Emerald eyes

The day passed very slowly, the young woman did not do much, so Nathan's job was simply to stand and watch her. There was really no danger inside the mansion, so Nathan had nothing to worry about but himself, which was enough.

He had to be constantly spending his essence by giving it to Amelia or he would have gone crazy. The feeling of not having essence was like feeling anemic, but it was much more like feeling the essence moving uncontrollably inside his body. Nathan never hesitated to get rid of it all.

Finally the evening came, and the maids went to prepare Erina's food, leaving her alone in the living room with Nathan. Erina finished reading the last page of the book, closed it and stretched out her arms wearily.

Then she turned her head and when she saw Nathan she screamed in fright. "AHHHHH!"

Nathan was startled by Erina's reaction and stood still thinking something had happened to her. Meanwhile, Erina raised her arm shakily and pointed at him.

"Y-you! What are you doing here?!" asked Erina stammering.

Nathan simply cocked his head in confusion. "What do you mean? I've been here all day"

"You also talk!" shouted Erina in surprise.

"I'm not a mannequin..." muttered Nathan.

Erina swallowed saliva and quickly pulled herself together, cleared her throat and looked at Nathan calmly, as if nothing had happened.

"I'm sorry, you're the first one to arrive until the evening... I was surprised" Erina explained, she looked at her maids who were busy making food. "I don't do it because I want to... I was born that way"

'If she could control it, I would be extremely dangerous' thought Amelia. She spent the whole day thinking along with Nathan theories of what it could be and watching him constantly grunting in pain every time his essence regenerated.

"Since I was little I've had over a thousand guards try to get close to me... Some even tried it as a dare" Erina said with a smile, from which Nathan could see traces of sadness.

At that moment Nathan felt a trace of essence regenerate, but instead of giving it to Amelia, he carefully brought it to his eyes. During the month he had been training with Abel, Abel had taught him about the positive and negative energy he had mentioned on the first day he had met him.

He had been trying all day to control even a hint of essence. It was dangerous to bring it to his eyes, but Nathan still took the risk and followed the steps he had practiced during the previous month.

A light began to surround Erina, it was both black and white, half of one color and half of the other.

The colors signified the person's current emotions, but beyond that they signified the deeper emotions, those that even some people were not aware they had.

Seeing enough, Nathan spent what little essence he had on seeing Erina's energy and silently grunted in pain.

"But I'm actually surprised you held out, I even heard my sister recommended you herself" Erina said with surprise. "I never ask my guard by name... they will eventually leave... Hey!"

Erina jumped up and ran to Nathan with a frightened look on her face. Nathan was surprised to see Erina approach him but did not move. She took a handkerchief she was carrying and held it close to Nathan's face.

She gently wiped his face for a couple of seconds and then walked away. Nathan didn't understand what was happening until he saw the handkerchief Erina was holding full of blood, then he brought his hand to one of his eyes and felt the warm blood trickle down his face.

"I-it's my fault... I'm sorry" Erina said with small tears threatening to fall down her tender face.

Nathan took Erina's handkerchief and lightly touched her hand. "Don't worry... this is nothing" Nathan knew that the bleeding was a consequence of him using the essence in his eye. He didn't want to ruin the whole first day of work, so he said the first thing that came to his mind to comfort Erina.

She wiped away the tears that were about to fall from her eyes and looked up and stared Nathan in the eyes. They both had similar features, their hair was completely black, and their eyes were emerald green.

Their gazes were only locked together in a couple of seconds before Erina quickly turned her head. "I-I... I'm sorry!"

After shouting that, Erina quickly ran off towards the rooms and entered one slamming the door shut. Nathan simply stood there with the blood-filled handkerchief in his hand not understanding what had happened to Erina, but for a moment, he could have sworn he had seen her eyes glow.

Suddenly, one of the maids came running up when she heard the door Erina slammed shut. When she saw Nathan holding a handkerchief full of blood, her skin lost all color, and she ran to Erina's room.

Nathan held the bloody handkerchief in his hand. Technically his work had been finished almost twenty minutes ago, but with everything that had happened Nathan had no choice but to stay a little longer to explain things.

After clearing up the misunderstanding, Nathan left the apartment and met Enarys, who was approaching him in the hallway.

Enarys looked at him seriously until she reached him. "What did you do to my sister?"

Nathan frowned at Enarys' words. "What did she do to me and why did my essence freak out when I got close to her?"

Enarys fell silent and sighed. "I'm surprised you seriously would have lasted all day inside that room"

"I've already been told that. I want to know what's going on with her" Nathan said seriously. If he hadn't spent all his essence in a short time he could have gotten hurt.

He had Amelia, he could give her essence quickly and get rid of it, but normally to expend essence one would have to use technique or strengthen the body. While essence could be expended relatively quickly, it still took a couple of minutes to empty completely.

That was why usually Erina's previous guards lasted such a short time... even seconds.

Enarys watched him silently and again sighed. "Well, I'm sorry. Yes, I deliberately hid it, but it was all for a good reason"

Nathan folded his arms listening to Enarys' apology, but seeing that it didn't work on him, Enarys had no choice but to give in.

"Fine, I'll explain everything. Come with me" Enarys said turning around and starting to walk down the hallway. Nathan followed her as he slowly regained some of his essence.
