Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 3: Welcome to Yankai

Following the intense battle, Unmei's world underwent a profound transformation. He could no longer dismiss the reality that his curse functioned as both a blessing and a burden, tethering him irrevocably to the realm of Yankai and their mission to combat the Yokai. Today was significant, as it marked the beginning of his official membership in Yankai, taking his initial steps toward a purpose larger than himself.

As he entered the main headquarters of Yankai, an impressive and technologically advanced structure concealed within the city, Unmei felt a surge of apprehension. The bustling corridors were vibrant with activity, populated by members clad in distinctive blue and silver uniforms. The level of skill and discipline demonstrated by his peers left Unmei questioning his place within this new environment.

He was greeted by Daichi, his cousin, whose presence radiated warmth and support. "Hello, Unmei. Are you prepared to meet the team?" Daichi inquired, offering encouragement.

Unmei nodded, attempting to calm his racing thoughts. "Yes, I am as prepared as I can be."

They proceeded to a spacious training hall where several Yankai members awaited his arrival. Upon entering the room, all eyes turned toward him, and an immediate silence fell. At the forefront of the group stood Atama Kaku, the leader of Yankai. Her demeanour was calm yet authoritative, exuding an aura of quiet power. She acknowledged Unmei with an approving nod.

"Everyone," she announced, "this is Unmei, our newest member and the vessel of the Shinwatekin curse. He has chosen to join our efforts despite the challenges he will face. Let us welcome him to Yankai."

A few members offered polite applause, while others provided nods of encouragement. Unmei scanned the group, making eye contact with each individual. Notably, he observed Yoichi, the reserved teleporter, leaning against the wall with a slight smile; Fukaime, the energetic idol, beaming and giving him a thumbs-up; and Mori Hanzo, who appeared to scrutinize Unmei with interest.

In contrast, Shiro Yuki displayed minimal acknowledgement, with his arms crossed and a narrowed gaze that rendered his expression inscrutable. Unmei recalled their previous encounter during the battle, feeling a blend of admiration and unease. Shiro exuded power and intensity, seemingly burdened by his challenges. Unmei resolved to maintain a respectful distance; it was evident that Shiro was not particularly enthusiastic about having a new roommate.

Atama Kaku addressed Unmei, stating, "Unmei, you will be assigned to Dormitory 7, where you will share accommodations with Shiro Yuki. Shiro, you are responsible for introducing him to the facilities and assisting him during his transition."

Shiro's expression remained unchanged, yet he acknowledged the directive with a nod. Atama then offered Unmei a final nod, her expression softening slightly as she remarked, "Welcome to Yankai, Unmei. We are pleased to have you here."

With the formalities concluded, Daichi guided Unmei through the remainder of the building. He provided an overview of the cafeteria, and training rooms, and ultimately led him to Dormitory 7. The environment was clean and minimalistic, featuring two twin beds on either side, desks, and a large window that overlooked the courtyard below.

Unmei placed his bag on the empty bed and surveyed the room. Shiro was already seated at his desk, reviewing files on his tablet with apparent disinterest.

"Is this the entirety of our accommodations?" Unmei inquired, attempting to initiate conversation.

Shiro did not shift his gaze. "Indeed, this is the extent of it. Please ensure that your belongings remain on your side and refrain from touching mine."

Unmei nodded, feeling slightly perturbed by Shiro's curt demeanour. "That is acceptable."

The ensuing silence was thick with tension and discomfort. Unmei had anticipated forming friendships at Yankai, yet his roommate seemed intent on maintaining a distance. He resolved to concentrate on unpacking, hoping the atmosphere would improve over time.

After several minutes, Shiro spoke, his tone subdued. "What motivated you to join Yankai?"

The inquiry took Unmei by surprise. He turned to observe Shiro, whose expression was inscrutable, yet his gaze was piercing.

Unmei inhaled deeply before responding. "I have been entrusted with this power, which I perceive as both a gift and a burden. I believe that if I do not learn to control it, it may ultimately control me. I do not wish to cause harm to anyone. Additionally..." He paused, memories of the recent battle flooding his mind, along with the weight of responsibility. "I aspire to protect others."

Shiro regarded Unmei intently for a moment before offering a slight nod. "It is essential to understand that this endeavor is not a mere game. We face life-and-death situations on a daily basis. If you are not prepared to make sacrifices, you will not endure."

Unmei felt a surge of defiance. "I did not come here to engage in frivolous activities. I came to fight, just as you do."

Shiro's expression softened marginally, suggesting he had found a measure of respect for Unmei's determination. "We shall see."

A knock on the door interrupted their discussion, and Daichi entered the room. "Greetings, you two. I thought you might be hungry. The cafeteria has some satisfactory food available this evening."

Unmei's face brightened with gratitude for the distraction. "Certainly. Let us proceed."

Shiro shrugged, set his tablet aside, and followed them out. As they navigated the bustling hallways, Unmei began to relax, feeling a sense of belonging to something greater than himself. Although he bore a curse and wrestled with doubts, he realized he was no longer alone.

During dinner, he listened to the stories shared by the other members of Yankai. Michael, the fast-talking speedster, boasted about a recent mission, while Kuon, the super-strength fighter, playfully challenged Fukaime to an arm-wrestling contest. Aoi sat nearby, observing with a smirk, her eyes sparkling with amusement. Yoichi sat in a corner, quiet yet vigilant, attentively monitoring the atmosphere. Despite the lively and chaotic environment, Unmei felt an unusual sense of belonging.

As the evening progressed, Unmei noticed Shiro glancing in his direction intermittently. There was something in Shiro's gaze—a hint of curiosity, perhaps even approval. Unmei hoped this indicated that they could work together and potentially develop a friendship over time.

Upon returning to the dormitory, Unmei settled into his bed, gazing up at the ceiling. The quiet hum of the Yankai base around him, coupled with the distant sounds of teammates conversing and laughing, provided a sense of comfort. For the first time in a considerable period, he felt he had a place where he belonged.

Tomorrow, his training would commence in earnest, and Unmei understood it would not be easy. Nevertheless, on this night, surrounded by the warmth and strength of his new colleagues, he permitted himself a rare moment of peace.
