Chereads / The Barons Sloth System / Chapter 23 - Cull the roots

Chapter 23 - Cull the roots

I looked over at Jones who had just had his arm reattached. It would kinda be great if he died right now. I doubted anyone would suspect me if he suddenly died right now. The question was simply how.

Wait? Shouldn't I be thinking this through more? I was just thinking about legitimately murdering someone. Though according to the system he may try to do the same for me. It was also possible Luna would be killed with me in the dormitories.

"What are you thinking so hard about?" The princess asked, standing beside my sister who was pinning me down.

"Murder." I responded.

"Good! We should kill him while the teacher isn't looking! How dare he try harming my little brother!" My sister shouted, fortunately the prince was too busy screaming and drowned out her statement before it reached the teachers ears.

"Well don't say it out loud. Besides, it's only murder if you get caught."

I thought for a moment about ways to assassinate the prince before remembering seeing a book of curses that can be used as a medium to curse people in the systems exchange store.

"Can curses be traced?" I asked.

"No, hence why they're considered one of the highest crimes. Without finding the culprit it's almost impossible to know if someones been cursed." The princess explained. "You're not thinking of trying are you."

"You just said it's only illegal if you get caught." I said.

"Well… Yes… But murder can be justified to the court. Not curses." The princess elaborated.

"What about a long distance weapon aura?" I asked.

"It takes an hour for the weapon aura to disperse so if you're unlucky then it won't work."

"Natural causes?"

"What kind?"

"A heart attack."

"No one would believe a rank-2 knight died of a heart attack, let alone one nearing rank-3."

"Disappeared without a trace."

"If you wait a few months maybe, but you'd be the first suspect."

"His room was struck by divine judgement from the heavens and he turned to ash."

"Is that even possible?" The princess asked.

"It might be…" I said, just checking the reward.

<9th Arcana: Obliterate>

"Really?" The princess asked unbelievingly.

"You tell me." I said, grabbing her palm and writing onto it with my finger.

"What are you doing?" The princess asked.

"Secret message." I said. "Arcana 9." I wrote onto her hand. As I finished the message the princesses eye suddenly went wide and she grabbed me by the collar.

"You have one!?" The princess yelled.

"Is it important or something?" I asked confusedly.

"Is it important? YES! It's incredibly important!"

"What are they?"

The princess looked left and right as my sister watched curiously before she drew letters on my palm like I did hers.

"Powerful blood bound artifact. Very powerful. Only 6 of 12 found. Arcana 9. Obliteration." The princess explained through the palm writing.

My elder sister had never been on the smart side though and didn't seem to get it despite it being done right in front of her.

"I see. So can we use it?" I asked.

The princess sighed. "Yea. We can use it. In fact, let's do it right now and make it seem like some random demi-god had beef with him." The princess said before placing mine, my sisters and her own palm together.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"From what I read, its activation alone takes ten thousand units of mana. Since the three of us are rank-2 knights we should have enough mana to act if we all pool in." The princess explained.

"Wait. seriously? We're actually doing this?" I asked, suddenly a bit panicked.

"Of course! I wanted to kill that guy for three years now. It's too bad the assassins I hired last time failed. Good thing I paid extra and they didn't reveal anything though." The princess confirmed.

"The what!?"

"Oh yea. I remember me and Dirk being targeted by kidnappers once, it was exciting."

"We were what!?"

"It is quite exhilarating isn't it. But when you're on the sending end it's far better when you succeed."

"I found it most funny that Dirpy here managed to sleep through the whole thing when two rank-3 knights were killed right beside him in his room."

"..." I gave up after the first few exchanges.

"Ah! Wait, let that teacher pick him up first, we'll kill them too." The princess suddenly added.

"Eh!? Why!? Is murder a hobby for you!?" I whispered in a low shout.

"No, they're a spy from the kingdom but we have no proof, so let's just get rid of them together." The princess added, somewhat auswaging my worries.

"I don't quite get it but let's kill the bastard!" My sister added.

The next moment I felt mana pouring into me before being stored around my core, building up into an impressive force.

'We're seriously doing this!' I panicked, finding the arcana which was a circle of strange mana surrounding my heart in a circle. I started controlling the mana manually to pour into the circle. Meanwhile the artifact was relatively intuitive to use. The strange mana seemed to have a bunch of knobs and buttons on it that controlled it. Just by feeling the knobs and buttons with my own mana I could even tell what each one did and turn them accordingly.

Soon enough, as the teacher the princess had specified picked Jones up and separated from the rest, preparing to take him to the academy's infirmary. Little did they know that would be their last thought before they were both swallowed by a blinding white light that immediately drew attention.

"The light!!!!" I yelled as I was blinded.

"What happened!" One of the other teachers yelled.

At the same time I suddenly felt both the princess and my sister's mana be cut off and realised why as my core energy started shooting down like a rocket and I immediately cut the flow of mana into the arcana.

A few moments later, the blinding light subsided and all that was left was a perfectly smooth hole where prince Jones and the spy had previously been standing.
