Chapter 45 - Chapter 45: First Of Many Victories

Above the vast expanse of the Iron Antler tribe's territory, a colossal image of a black dragon soared, its obsidian scales glistening under the moonlight. It departed, leaving the moon as the silent witness to the resounding victory that had unfolded within the towering white walls of the tribe.

Perched upon the back of this majestic black dragon was Gideon, a formidable leader, and his elite squad of 23 lionkin warriors. Their faces bore triumphant smiles as they surveyed the terrain beneath them. They had emerged victorious from their very first conquest, a victory so overwhelming that it had sent shockwaves throughout the region.

The immense wings of the dragon unfurled, causing the trees below to quiver in response as the beast descended gracefully to the forest floor. At a certain altitude, Gideon and his lionkin companions leaped from the dragon's back, landing with unparalleled grace.

"Big brother!" Lucy's voice rang out with unbridled joy as she spotted her brother touching down on solid ground. "I knew you would emerge victorious."

In Lucy's wake, tens of thousands of sentient black spines, created to safeguard her during her solitary journeys through the forest, swayed in the night breeze. Pinned to her dress was the invaluable *Tracker's Quill*, allowing Gideon to monitor her safety at every fleeting moment.

Leo chuckled heartily, his demeanor exuding warmth and pride. "Of course," he declared with a wide, confident sweep of his arms. "Wouldn't you give your beloved big brother a warm embrace after such a hard-fought triumph?" He inquired, his smile infectious.

"Eh, you're covered in blood and you smell bad," Lucy retorted, narrowing her eyes in playful exaggeration.

Leo theatrically placed a hand over his heart. "Ah, you wound me. Being denied a hug from my little sister stings more than any battle wound I've ever received." Leo sighed dramatically. "I remember the days when you used to follow me everywhere, not wanting me to vanish from your sight. Those were the good old days."

Laughter erupted from the lionkin warriors surrounding them. Such exchanges were a common sight, and they relished every moment of it.

"Here you go again, Leo. This time, we're the ones feeling embarrassed for you," quipped one of the lionkin, prompting more laughter from the group.

"Nowadays, I'm a lady," Lucy retorted with a coy grin, her eyes scanning the crowd until they alighted upon Gideon's imposing figure at the center. "Lord Gideon."

Lucy gingerly scooped Gideon from the forest floor, cradling him against her soft, protective embrace.

Gideon made no attempt to resist; instead, he settled comfortably into her arms, allowing his gaze to wander appreciatively over the lionkin warriors who had gathered around.

With a dignified nod, Gideon began to speak. "Our inaugural battle has concluded as a resounding success. Each and every one of you performed admirably in the skirmish, and I must admit, I am pleasantly surprised by the depth of your abilities." A gentle smile played on Gideon's lips. "It is through your unwavering dedication and tireless efforts that we have achieved this crucial milestone. As your leader, I extend my heartfelt gratitude. Without your collective strength, this endeavor would have been an insurmountable challenge."

In a harmonious chorus, the lionkin warriors chuckled and sheepishly scratched the backs of their heads. Their faces tinged with a flattering shade of crimson.

"You need not praise us so extravagantly, Lord Gideon; we were merely executing our duties," responded one lionkin, a hint of humility in his words, as he nonchalantly kicked at the forest floor, a bashful smile gracing his lips.

Another lionkin chimed in with a grin, "But if you insist on showering us with compliments, we will graciously accept."

Gideon gazed up at Lucy, his lips curving into a playful smile. "These individuals are incredibly easy to please. Just a single word of praise, and they transform into shy girls being complimented by their crush. It's rather disconcerting. Perhaps I should refrain from showering them with praise," he quipped, his words tinged with a teasing tone.

Lucy chuckled softly in response, her eyes twinkling with amusement as she held Gideon's diminutive form in her arms. Her fingers brushed gently over his sleek, black, spiky fur, marveling at its softness. Despite his small stature, he exuded an air of resilience and strength that was nothing short of impressive.

One of the lionkin warriors couldn't help but interject, "Come now, Lord Gideon, there's no need to be so reserved with your praise."

This was followed by a chorus of hearty laughter from the lionkin warriors, who had gathered around Gideon. They appreciated his light-hearted banter and the camaraderie they shared.

Gideon joined in their laughter, his eyes and face radiant with gentleness and joy. His presence alone seemed to brighten the spirits of those around him, a testament to his natural leadership and charisma.

Lucy, on the other hand, continued to gaze at Gideon with a sense of wonder. Her gaze was fixed on his small, furry form, cradled lovingly in her arms. She couldn't help but smile as she stroked his fur, her touch gentle and affectionate. But her heart swelled with something deeper than mere affection; it was a profound sense of protectiveness and care for this remarkable creature.

As she continued to caress Gideon's fur, Lucy momentarily looked up and found Leo watching her. Their eyes locked, and in that silent exchange, they communicated volumes. It was a connection beyond words, a shared understanding that transcended spoken language. They exchanged nods, their smiles filled with mutual understanding and reassurance.

However, Gideon's voice broke the silence. "Is something amiss, Lucy? You're holding me a bit tighter than usual."

Lucy's gaze returned to Gideon, meeting his compassionate black eyes. They were eyes filled with kindness, compassion, and a promise of unwavering protection—a ruler's gaze, wise and caring. "No, nothing's wrong," she replied with a small smile. "I'm just relieved that you've returned safely from the battle."

Gideon's smile in response was warm and reassuring, radiating a sense of safety that was as comforting as it was genuine. "We will always come back," he assured her with conviction.

One of the lionkin raised his hand eagerly, eager to share their tales. "You should have seen us, Lucy! Lord Gideon was truly magnificent in battle. He put Algani and Gighan in their place—though I must admit, Gighan was wriggling like a worm at one point. But now he has all his limbs intact!"

Lucy's eyes sparkled with amusement as she leaned in closer. "I want to hear all about it," she urged, her curiosity piqued.

Gideon chuckled, his laughter resonating with warmth. "We'll have plenty of time for that tomorrow," he said, snapping his fingers. In an instant, a large square platform formed, created by Gideon's black spines. It was the platform they would use to return to the black dragon, which would carry them home.

With laughter filling the air, the lionkin warriors eagerly hopped onto the black platform. Left behind was Leo, who took a moment to look back at the Iron Antler tribe, acknowledging their presence and significance. Then, he turned his gaze forward, focusing on his comrades and the journey ahead.

Leo's voice carried a sense of unwavering determination as he spoke. "This is just the beginning. Lord Gideon will lead us on the path of unity, and I will do everything in my power to assist him in achieving his goal. Every step of it."

A mischievous grin crossed the face of one of the lionkin warriors as he teased Leo. "Why are you standing there all serious, Leo? Are you still nursing the wounds of your little sister rejecting your hug request?" Laughter erupted from his comrades at the playful jab.

Gideon turned his gaze towards Leo, the moonlight casting a soft glow on his black eyes. "Leo, let's head home," he said with a tone of gentle authority.

In unison, all the lionkin, including Lucy, turned their attention to Leo. Their expressions bore unified, gentle smiles, as if they had heard the promise Leo had just made and wholeheartedly agreed with it.

Leo nodded resolutely. "Yes, Lord Gideon," he affirmed, joining the others on the floating black platform. It was a symbol of their unity and shared purpose as they embarked on their journey back home.
