Chapter 2 - pursuit of shadows

Tears blurred Evelina's vision as she fumbled to start the car's engine. The engine roared to life, and the car became their refuge, racing against the uncertainty that loomed like a menacing storm. The wind outside howled in harmony with her pounding heart as they sped away from the place they once called home.

In the backseat, Ethan, the little beauty with his milky skin and emerald eyes, clung to his teddy bear, his tears leaving streaks on the plush companion. His small frame trembled with confusion and fear, unable to grasp the gravity of the situation that had torn his world asunder. His voice quivered in innocent despair, seeking answers that seemed as elusive as the raindrops on the car's window.

"Why, Momma? Why we runnin'?" His voice trembled as he choked back sobs. "I want Dad."

Evelina's heart ached at the desperation in her son's voice. She wished she had answers to ease his pain, but all she had were questions of her own. Her hands gripped the steering wheel, knuckles white with tension, as she navigated the winding road.

Her husbands voice echoed in her ears, the raw desperation etched into every word. It haunted her, leaving her with a sense of impending doom. She could still hear him, see the tears in his eyes, and the love that had poured through the phone, a love now severed by an unknown force.

As Ethan's cries intensified, Evelina's worries deepened, and she glanced at the rearview mirror. Multiple cars trailed behind them, their presence like shadows in the night. Panic seized her, but she knew she had to protect her son at all costs.

"Get down, Ethan," she pleaded, her voice heavy with desperation. "Get your head down and don't look up, okay?"

Ethan, his innocent eyes brimming with tears, obeyed his mother's plea without question. He lowered himself onto the backseat, his small frame trembling with a fear that went beyond his years.

Evelina's foot pressed harder on the accelerator, the car hurtling forward like a bullet. The relentless pursuit continued, the menacing black McLaren Senna leading the chase, flanked by equally formidable AMG GT3s. They closed in, creating a suffocating ring around the desperate mother and her terrified son.

And then, a gunshot shattered the night's fragile tranquility. The pain was searing, and Evelina's scream pierced the air as her grip on the steering wheel slackened. Tears streamed down her face, her final words a desperate plea to her beloved son.

"You have to survive, Ethan, my love. Survive and don't look for your father. Please, survive. I love you. Iā€”" Her words trailed off as her breaths grew shallow, consciousness slipping away.

The car came to a shuddering stop as Evelina refused to risk her son's life any further. The pursuing cars closed in, menacingly encircling them. But then, an unexpected blast rocked the night, sending shockwaves through the chase. Sirens wailed in the distance, and as Ethan's world spun into darkness, the echoes of the trauma and desperation filled his ears.

In a dimly lit room, the only source of illumination seeping through the window, lay a boy of ethereal beauty, his hair as white as snow. Suddenly, a pained voice pierced the silence, and the boy's eyes snapped open, distress etching his features as he cried out in agony. Traumatic memories and the chaotic scenes that had preceded flashed before his eyes. Tears streamed down his cheeks, and his sobs filled the room.

The door burst open, revealing a well-dressed man who exuded an air of authority, his attire speaking volumes about his status. The previously weeping boy stopped and scrutinized the man from head to toe.

" w-wheres my mother? can you please take me to my mom?" the silent tears rolling down the now sniffing boy. he asked with a desperate voice.

However, the words that escaped the man's lips shattered the boy's world into a million pieces.

"Your mother is gone, and despite our best efforts, we couldn't save him," the man somberly conveyed. The boy's world crumbled around him; both his parents were now lost to him. Yet, there were no answers forthcoming to his myriad questions.

The man gestured to one of his associates, who promptly stepped forward, realizing the task at hand. They approached the young boy, who sat on the bed, his world upended. They gently advised him to rest for the time being.

In the wake of this tragedy, the government assumed responsibility for the young orphan, whose life had taken a drastic and sudden turn. While the circumstances were far from ideal, the boy had little choice but to accept the government's offer.
