Ethan tensed, not daring to move a muscle, for fear of drawing the attention of the iron-toothed rat queen. He wasn't concerned about his scent giving him away; the overpowering stench of blood was everywhere, effectively masking his own. He believed that if he remained still, he would be safe.
His theory proved correct. After a short time, the rat queen issued another thunderous roar and turned, retreating into the cave. Ethan remained frozen, giving the creature ample time to disappear before he even considered moving.
Just as he was about to check whether the beast was truly gone, a system notification jolted him.
