Chapter 5 - An introduction to magic

After sitting down for a while, Bob fell asleep. He was extremely tired as a result of all the running away he had done earlier.

[Great, you are asleep. How am I supposed to wake you up if there is something dangerous around? I didn't implement any notification sound. Well, I guess I could add an alarm to the system. That doesn't sound too hard to do. I could use the sound of a tornado siren. That sounds fun. I could also use the sound of someone screaming in pain. That also sounds like a good idea.]

After about an hour of working on implementing this new feature, Nox finally succeeded. He eventually settled on using the sound of an explosion since it would definitely alert Bob whenever he played it. He also didn't want to go too overboard with it since he didn't want to give Bob trauma.

After about an hour of waiting while doing nothing, Nox got bored and decided to start working on some other magical project since Bob was sleeping peacefully. There also didn't seem to be more monsters in the area, so there wasn't any issue with letting his guard down.

After an additional two hours, Bob was startled awake by an extremely loud explosion. Looking around, he failled to figure out what the source of the noise was, until he looked at the window that was still floating nearby.

[Good morning! I successfully implemented an alarm to the system. Right now I can wake you up and appraise targets.]

Bob was obviously extremely annoyed. "Couldn't you use a normal alarm sound instead of of explosion sound? And could you make it less loud that it doesn't risk damaging my eardrums?"

[I knew I should have just used a tornado siren.]

"No! Just use a normal alarm clock sound. Anyway, why did you wake me up?"

[Cat is done with cleaning up this world. There aren't any bandits or monsters left, so I assume that he will come here soon.]

"That makes sense. Right, could you show me Cat's information?" wondered Bob.

[Name: Cat

Rank: S

Species: Cat

Gender: Cat

Faction: Adventurers guild

Comments: Probably the strongest cat of all times. Does NOT like being pet. Note: Nox, please stop editing this file, I do not care about being cute.]

"This is really weird. Why does it say that Cat's gender is cat? What does that even mean?" Bob asked with a confused frown.

[Someone asked Cat what he identified as, and the answer was that Cat identifies as a cat.]

Suddenly, a voice rang out. "What is going on here? Oh, you attracted the attention of the god of chaos. That's an issue."

Turning around, Bob noticed that Cat was there. However, as usual, Cat's words only brought more questions.

"What god of chaos?"

[That's just how some rude people call me. I dont cause that much chaos.]

"You have no right to complain about this. You know what you did," commented Cat with an annoyed tone.

"What did he do?" asked Bob

[Nothing. Do not mind Cat. Anyway, wanna know about magic?]

Despite noticing Nox's blatant attempt at diverting his attention, Bob decided not to ask any more questions . "I would like to learn more about magic."

[Alright, so magic is split into three parts. The first thing to know is that you need magic crystals to use magic. The element and level of the crystal used will influence the spell. The second thing to note is the technique used to cast the spell. Arcane magic and sword techniques are just different ways of manifesting one's mana. Finally, the most important thing to understand is that everyone's mana is different. Someone's mana could be suited to summon powerfull creatures while someone else could be able to enchant weapons with great power. However, neither of them would ever be able to replicate what the other person is doing.]

"I think I understand. In my case, my magic is best at destroying things?"

"Yes, your mana is suited for attack magic and not much else," Cat answered. "However, do not underestimate your mana even if it isn't versatile. Most people need to use complicated techniques in order to do magic while you only need to think of what you want to destroy and how you want to do it."

[Right, I forgot to explain something about magic crystals. They are divided in ranks from F to S. The higher the rank of the crystal, the more mana can be channeled into it. However, higher rank magic crystals are harder to control. For reference, the crystal that Cat gave you is F rank.]

After listening to the explanation, Bob reflected about this information. "What about you two? How does your mana work?"

[Mine is weird. It ignores the laws of physic and magic, so I need to apply them manually everytime I do anything. It does allow me to break reality tho. It's quite fun, I should show you one day.]

"Nox, this is exactly why you are called the god of chaos. You really should stop doing that. Anyway, my mana allows me to use part of the power of the god of light. The details are a bit too complicated for me to explain, but all I need to do is to use arcane techniques to call on the power of the god of light. Before you ask, no, I am not a cleric and no, I am not part of any of those annoying cults," Cat clarified with a displeased tone.

Bob, wondering what the cat was talking about aksed: "What kind of cults are we talking about here?"

[Every single god has at least 5 different religions venerating them. For some reason, most people think that gods are some sort of perfect beings. In thruth, gods are exactly like everyone else. We just call gods people who are extremely strong due to special circumstances. Honestly, I find that the religions venerating me are quite funny, but Cat hates them.]

"Nox, every single cult of chaos is considered a terrorist organisation. That is absolutely not funny."

[It is.]
