Amari hummed, skipping over stones and dead branches as he walked. The fact that he had improved was evident. Apart from that, they were almost out of The Pit. This meant he was one step closer to finding Tamasir'Alfera and his father.
Even the elusive Orator and Astrologer class received boosts. He still had no idea what any of it meant, but seeing the change made him happy.
Belat also looked happy but not as much as he did
"What are you giggling about, you cheeky little brat?" Amari asked, picking the pup up by his scruff. He was heavier and larger than when they left home.'It's only been three days.
He bit his arm in quick retaliation and jumped to the ground.
Amari grabbed an arm in mock sadness. "Ow, that hurts!
Belat stuck a tongue out, "That's what you get meanie!"
Slightly to the side, Lilia giggled and Amari shot her a look. In what must have been a painful movement, she snapped her neck back before he could say anything.
His gaze lingered on the demon group longer. A strange group they were. One Higher Demon travelling and protecting a bunch of Lesser Demons.
A strong, cranky demon, a cute demon girl, a bold chef and a mature Gothic demon girl.
At least those were the ones he knew. Fuller, Lilia, Ken and Isla were very interesting individuals. The rest were archetypal yes-men. He didn't like those types of people. Especially if they didn't even have their own opinions.
Amari was off to a rough start because he instinctively knew that the Demon Academy was sure to have many of those types of people within it.
He sighed and pushed the thought to the back of his mind. None of that mattered as long as they didn't bother him and interfere with his mission. He ignored Belat's mocking attempts and scooched over to the back where Fuller walked in solace.
The demon occasionally murmured something to himself, as he chewed his fingernails. Amari felt guilty for interrupting but did so anyway.
"We'll be there in five minutes. Go away. I'm thinking." Fuller waved him away, as he stared into space
Amari looked expectantly into the distance upon hearing Fuller's words.
"Really? We'll be out of the Pit soon? Oh man, Let's goooo!" he punched the air multiple times.
"Let's go? What does that mean? We're already there, though?" Fuller's brows furrowed, only paying attention to him now.
Amari looked back at Fuller, sweat running down his back.
"Ah, it's something we used to say back in my forest." He just thought of an excuse and shrugged it off.
Fuller eyed him, "Yeah, riiight…"
He didn't buy the explanation.
"Anyhow," Amari continued, changing the subject. "I thought there was supposed to be some big-ass wall. If we're only five minutes away, shouldn't we have seen it by now?"
"Well, yeah."
"What?" Amari asked, trying to wrap his head around it.
The other demon turned back to the distance, raising his hands.
"Well, look at it this way; you have a large prison. As big as this Pit is, filled with the most heinous criminals known to exist. The only way you can even imprison these criminals is by convincing them that they aren't in jail, that the place was ruled by them. What do you think would happen if they saw a wall blocking the rest of the world out? What do you think those criminals would do?"
Amari fell silent. His mind flashed back to the war they fought on Earth.
The government had betrayed them, then when they overthrew the government, the others betrayed them.
This prison analogy, unpleasant as it was, was the best explanation for that. And being someone from Earth, he was all too familiar with that kind of system.
"Does that answer your question?" Fuller's voice called snapping him out of thought.
He nodded.
"Good. Cause we're here. Welcome to the end of the Pit and the start of a new life."
Now he could see the wall.
It was massive, over a hundred metres tall and a few dozen metres thick. It was made from a black crystalline structure that resembled obsidian. Large sentry towers were lined up at the side of the wall and a very noticeable platform lay at the foot of the large wall.
"Damn…" Amari sucked in a large breath. A smaller one was heard from Belat who could barely lift his head up to see the top of the wall.
The rest of the group, however, didn't seem as impressed.
"Come on, let's go," Fuller called out to him. The other demons had already moved to the large circular platform.
Amari gave a dazed nod and followed them meekly.
It was more crowded than he expected.
'So many people in the Pit!'
Several people in armour moved back and forth from the mini sentry posts lined up on the bottom of the wall. All of them appeared to line up on the platform.
'What is it, anyway?' Amari wondered, peering at the engraved circle.
It looked like a magic rune. Just less magical.
However, the circle's lines flashed with blue rays, causing a brief period of blindness for everyone. Then three people magically appeared on the circle's surface.
'Oh,'
Amari's mouth formed a small 'O', as his eyes flashed with understanding.
He continued following after the Ifrits, dodging and ignoring the menacing glares of some people in the queue.
"Why aren't we lining up as well?" Amari whispered at Fuller.
A small collective chuckle erupted from the other demons. They heard him.
Fuller smiled, "Because, unlike these poor blokes, we have special treatment!"
A few minutes later, all the Ifrits, Amari and Belat stood atop the platform and a second later, they were gone.
Amari was no longer in the pit.
