Chapter 10 - Dark Revelations

Over the following weeks, Liv threw herself into research comparing Lucian's accounts to legends of shapeshifters from around the world. She noted consistencies in the phases of the moon affecting transformations and instincts waxing or waning accordingly.

Her investigation also unearthed little-known references to "Children of the Night" preying upon remote villages in centuries past. Whether truth or fantasy, the similarities to Lucian's tales of "Vampyre" covens sheltering in deep woods piqued Liv's interest.

When they met by chance around town, she peppered him with more questions, which he always patiently answered. His eyes would trace her features as if memorizing each detail, kindling a flame in Liv's belly that thrilled and unsettled her.

During those brief interactions, their intellectual bond grew into easy camaraderie and flirtatious banter. But Liv sensed Lucian holding back some dark secret, his charm masking a turbulent inner nature. She yearned to know more of the man beneath the Alpha mask.

One sultry afternoon, Liv got her chance. While working in her garden, anxious howls and snarls rose from the forest's edge. She raced towards the commotion and stumbled upon a gory discovery that made her blood run cold.

Three mangled bodies lay torn to ribbons, one barely clinging to life. Lucian and several other wolves circled defensively, hackles raised at a vampyr with gleaming fangs bared mockingly. Its inhuman features were thrown into stark relief by the setting sun.

Liv gasped, earning the creature's ravenous leer. "Ah, an appetizer joins our revel. You've brought the she-wolf to me, dog." It lunged with impossible speed but was intercepted by a massive Russian wolf.

Lucian's jaws closed around its throat in a vicious crunch of bone. As the vampyr crumbled into dust, he turned to Liv with a grief-stricken whine. She knelt by the fallen packmates with welling tears, stroking their fur in final comfort.

That night, Lucian explained at Liv's cottage how vampyr covens have always preyed upon the forest and skirmished with his kin for dominance. But his rival brother Dmitri, a former Beta who turned coats to the cold-blooded loners, orchestrated this attack.

"He seeks to usurp my leadership and bring chaos and carnage until none remain to challenge him." Lucian paced restlessly, anguish and fury warring beneath his skin. "I've stalemated Dmitri so far, but his forces grow bolder without reprisal. The people are caught in the crossfire of our conflict."

Realization struck Liv like a blow. "So the strange wounds and missing persons I've noted were signs of this hidden war all along." Lucian nodded grimly as she pieced the disturbing truth together at last.

A guttural bark echoed in the distance, answered by howls of the pack mustering for the coming confrontation. Lucian strode to the door, muscles tensed for the looming fight. But he hesitated, tension draining from his robust frame as he turned soulful eyes upon Liv.

"Stay safe inside where I cannot sense threat approaching. Once this is over, there will be peace in these woods again." His voice dropped to a husky rasp. "You've come to mean more to me than you could imagine, Olivia Dawson. There is darkness in my nature, but you light a flame to guide me true."

Before Liv could reply, he swept her into a searing kiss that left her reeling. Then Lucian disappeared into the night, leaving her touched by passion yet haunted by his ominous parting words. What fierce realities lay beneath the Alpha male's charm remained cloaked in shadow. But Liv's heart now hung in the balance if she meant so much to the territory's defiant Lord.
