Chapter 21 - THE CANTEEN CAPER

The canteen had always been our favorite spot during recess. It was a place where we indulged in crispy, golden samosas that I could literally die for. Every bite was a burst of flavor, and those samosas were the highlight of our breaks. Another favorite of ours was a chocolate toffee called "Merlin." Its taste was indescribable, a perfect blend of sweetness and chocolatey goodness that left us craving more.

However, one day, the school authorities decided to close the canteen due to some ruckus caused by students. The news hit us like a bolt from the blue. Our beloved canteen, the heart of our recess, was suddenly off-limits. We didn't know what to do with ourselves during breaks anymore.

One afternoon, as the sun beat down on us, I found myself near the canteen area with Advik, Anirudh, Binita, Asmita, and Amaira. We were peeking through the windows, reminiscing about the good times we had there.

"Look," Advik said, pointing excitedly. "The Merlin container is still there!"

"I wish we could take some," I said wistfully, staring at the container filled with the delectable toffees.

Advik and Anirudh exchanged a knowing glance, and a mischievous grin spread across their faces. We all knew exactly what they were thinking. The thrill of a heist excited us, and we quickly devised a plan.

"Asmita, Binita, you two keep an eye out for any teachers," Anirudh instructed. "The rest of us will figure out how to get those toffees."

Asmita and Binita took their positions as lookouts, their eyes scanning the area for any signs of approaching teachers. Meanwhile, the rest of us gathered near the canteen window, brainstorming ways to reach the container.

"We could use sticks," I suggested, searching the ground for anything long enough to reach inside.

"Or maybe we can roll up some papers to extend our reach," Advik added, grabbing a few sheets from his backpack.

We tried everything we could find—sticks, rolled-up papers—but nothing worked. The container was just out of reach, and our efforts seemed futile. Yet, despite our lack of success, the entire endeavor was filled with laughter and excitement.

"We should have brought a longer stick maybe" I said, chuckling at the absurdity of our situation.

"If we were grown-ups, we would've figured this out easily," Anirudh remarked, shaking his head with a smile.

As we continued our futile attempts, the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the schoolyard, stating recess was about to end. We finally accepted that our mission was a failure, but the day had been incredibly enjoyable. The thrill of the attempt, the camaraderie, and the shared goal had made it a memorable adventure.

"Well, at least we tried," I said, shrugging.

"And we had fun," Amaira added, her eyes twinkling with amusement.

As we walked away from the canteen, we couldn't help but laugh at our failed heist. It was one of those moments that bonded us even more, a shared experience that we would reminisce about for years to come.

Our days without the canteen were different, but we found new ways to enjoy our breaks. We created our own little snack corner, bringing food from home and sharing it with each other. We sat under the big tree near the playground, telling stories, playing games, and laughing together.

One day, as we sat in our new spot, Asmita brought up the canteen incident. "Remember when we tried to steal the Merlin toffees?" she said, giggling.

"How could I forget?" I replied. "We looked so ridiculous poking sticks through the window."

"It was fun, though," Anirudh said, smiling. "Even though we didn't get the toffees, we had a great time."

Our failed heist became a legendary story among our group. It symbolized our adventurous spirit and our ability to find joy in the simplest of things. Though the canteen was closed, our bond grew stronger, and we realized that the true essence of our friendship lay in the moments we shared, not in the snacks we ate.

And so, our 9th-grade year continued, filled with laughter, adventures, and the unbreakable bond of friendship. We learned to cherish every moment, knowing that it was these experiences that would shape our memories and define our journey together.
