Chapter 4 - Paintings

As Anna walked to the house, her mind wandered with different thoughts. She had just acquired a job for herself but she was scared. Her chest filled with anxiety at the thought of staying here during the night. What could possibly happen when everyone was fast asleep?

Reaching the house, she opened the door to see that Lady Gaga hadn't come back from the market. She removed her coat and put the mouse back on the tiny cage. Anna wore the small apron hung on the wall and she headed to the kitchen to cook.

The next day, Anna didn't woke up on time as she had spent the last night talking to Lady Gaga since she would be leaving to work in the Windsor Mansion. She was a bit anxious of how life is in there but it was just a matter of time and she would get back to her mother. Lady Gaga had instructed Anna on the things to do to avoid people from knowing who she is.

She cursed herself for not waking up on time. Wearing the coat, she fed the mouse with bread before putting it in her pocket.

She carried her small bag which had clothes filled with it and went outside the house to see Lady Gaga pulling weeds.

Upon seeing Anna fully ready, Lady Gaga stood up and walked to her.

"Anna you should be careful. The Windsor family have had bad history. Just do your best and do stay away from danger." The woman said.

Anna nodded her head in understanding. "I will do my best."

When Anna reached the Mansion, she was greeted by a woman in her late thirties. The woman wore a small frown on her forehead.

"Good morning Madam Windsor." Anna greeted.

"You must be Anna." The woman guessed.

"Yes I am." She nodded.

"What have you been doing for you to come this late on your first day of work?" She eyed her from head to toe.

"I apologize for my lateness. I promise it would not happen again." She assured the woman.

Anna raised her head and as she was about to go into the Mansion, the woman pulled her to look at her.

"Your work in this house is to cook and clean and not doll yourself around my son. The very minute I catch you not doing work but instead mingling with him, you would be fired." The woman spoke in a hush tone. "Do you understand?"

"I do." Anna nodded her head.

"Leave." She said and Anna quickly walked into the house.

Butler Sam showed up and led her to her room where she would be staying with another maid.

As Anna walked with the Butler, she noticed a cloak figure standing near the pillars. He was watching her intently with his dark eyes.

The person reminded her of her guardian Angel whom she had not seen since she ran away from the church. In this town, the people did not believe such that a person has a Guardian Angel watching you wherever you go.

She glanced at the cloak figure again and saw that he had disappeared from there. Was she imagining?

She placed her bag on the table before glancing at the young girl who had stood up to come meet her.

The girl had a blonde hair with round face and brownish eyes.

"You must be the new maid." The girl said with a smile. "I am Victoria. You are?"

"Anna." She replied. "How long have you been working here?"

"A year now." She said.

"A year." Anna nodded my head.

"I guess we will be spending more time together." Victoria's eyes brightened.

Anna was glad to know that there would be someone to keep her company while working here. She promised herself to leave as soon as possible once she gets enough money to pay off her mother's depts.

"I have been hearing news about the Windsor family and how they had some dark secret." Anna said with a little bit of curiosity.

"It would be better if you keep your mouth shut and stay away from trouble." A small smile rested on her cheek.

She nodded.

Anna asked. "You wouldn't mind taking me around the Mansion so I can be familiar with it, would you?"

"Not at all. I am in my break time, we should go now." She offered and both girls stepped out of the room.

They walked down the corridor of the Mansion, it was long and wide. Canvas paintings of the Windsor family was hung up on the wall of the corridor.

As they continued to walk, Anna noticed a painting that made her skin itch. The background of the panting was dark and spooky. It was a painting that belonged to a beautiful woman with striking curves. What made Anna nervous more was that the person next to her was removed. It was as if the person was torn off from the painting.

When Anna raised her hand to touch, Victoria smack it off.

"Don't touch." Victoria said to her.

"Who is she?" Anna asked staring at the woman who appeared to be sad.

In a low voice, Victoria spoke to her. "This is the former Madam of the Windsor family but unfortunately she passed away from an incurable illness."

"What happened to the next painting? Why was it removed?" She questioned.

"None of the servants know who the person standing next to late Madam Teresa is." Victoria replied.

"We should continue walking. My break would soon be over." Victoria muttered.

Anna nodded her head and glanced at the painting one last time. For a moment, she noticed the woman's iris flicker with pure white which quickly disappeared when Anna blinked. Did the woman eyes just change colour or what exactly?

Before she could look more, she felt the presence of someone, making her turn around to see a handsome man wearing a black coat stand in front of her.

She quickly bowed her head respectfully.

The man was tall and had a dark black hair that was roughly combed to the side of his head. He had smooth jawline that was firm and his lips was well carved. His aura was strong and powerful, sending shivers through her spine.

Eyeing her from head to toe, a small grin appeared on his lips. "You must be Anna."

How did he know her name?
