Chereads / THE CHALLENGE (first epistle) / Chapter 5 - •The Game Of Luck•

Chapter 5 - •The Game Of Luck•

  {"Aliya"}

"Will all students please gather at the grand hall immediately" A voice echoes loudly through the hidden speakers. I stand up making my way to the hall. My gaze meets Bella's as she ambles towards me pulling my hand, causing me to smile at her.

"Hey Ali"

"Hey, Bella, what do u think this is about?" I asked, but she shook her head negatively. We both find seats settling in and wait for others to do the same. After everyone settles in, the whole place became quiet as the chancellor walks in.

"Hello students," She halted glancing across the hall as if observing each student. After a deep breath she continued.

"In two days, we are to gather back here, there will be a game and this game only applies to females and forget it if you are mated. Others may not participate, so let's meet here again by 10:am and late coming will incur serious punishment". Giving a cut nod, she walks away from the hall.

This is strange, a game? Haven't experienced anything like that since I got here.

"What is on your mind?" Bella asked, jerking my shoulder.

"Well, the announcement. What game do they intend to play with just the females, mateless girls at that, doesn't that seem suspicious?". I asked in curiosity.

" True, I did hear from someone that the king wants to choose a bride". She responded, smirking mischievously.

"What do you mean?" I was confused.

"It's the gossip going around school, especially from the Wolf kinds. They said something about a contest, I mean why else will this game be for just females"

I feel a bit disappointed hearing this information, I know I am never going to have him but am shocked he wants to choose a bride through a challenge, I mean, he's powerful and all, so why can't he just pick someone.

"Ali?" Bella snaps me out of my thoughts with concern in her eyes.

"Are you okay?"

"Oh yes I am, I am just surprised that he wants to play a game to choose a bride instead of getting someone for himself to marry," I replied.

"Yeah I know right, but I don't blame him much, you know how much he hates humans and weaklings so maybe he just wants the best and that can be proven through the contest." She explained.

"He hates humans?" I asked in disgust.

"I don't know Ali, I heard so," she responded with a sad look.

"Well, good luck to him," I say, dragging her along with me to the library as we both make our way out of the hall. I can still see students hanging around, chatting away time. Bella stops and excuses herself saying she will catch up with me later, I know she hates going to the library.

Soon at the library and walking straight to my favourite spot, my eyes landed on her. I don't want this right now, why the hell does she like getting on my nerves.

Coming out of the hall after the announcement, I go straight to the library taking a seat at my favourite spot. It's a hidden area with a window by the wall.

The view outside the window is soo beautiful and peaceful, the trees hide the beautiful sun rays making it just perfect. Tilting my head to my left side, there I see the most annoying human girl I know, walking towards me. What does she want?

Aliyah is one of the people that hates me in this school though she's human. Humans are scared of our kind but Aliyah is not. Every time she sees me, she stares daggers into my soul like I am the cause of her problems.

I don't know why she hates me but well I don't care. I ignore her as she stands in front of me staring straight into my eyes,

"What?" I finally asked. Humans aren't supposed to make eye contact with us, it's a sign of challenge and disrespect. I can tolerate my Alpha and his family treating me anyhow they want but I won't let a human girl insult me and the fact she's looking directly into my eye is provoking my wolf.

"You are on my seat" She answered glaring at me, causing me to huff.

"Your seat?" I questioned, "This is the library for God's sake Aliya, and there are many empty chairs to sit in. So please go somewhere else and sit." I replied glancing down at my book and continued my reading, She sighs and walks away. I really need to know how she's not scared of us.

My mind wanders back to the announcement today, what on earth do they need females and mateless girls for?. Well, my birthday is in two days and I hope I find my mate, that's all I am interested in.

We werewolves find our mates once we get to 18, but am going to be 23 and still yet to find mine. I haven't given up yet although it's becoming difficult these days for wolves to find their mates, I hope to find mine before escaping from that heartless pack.

I shake off the distractions continuing my reading, still feeling Aliya staring daggers at me from where she's sitting.

-------------------------------------------------

"Welcome back students, let's begin." The chancellor announces. "You are to come forward one at a time, dip your right hand into the golden box while being blindfolded and pick up the first object your hand touches. Raise it and find out what you have picked and then quietly walk back to your seat" She finished.

I didn't expect this on my birthday but here we are in the hall playing the so-called game of luck. Every corner of the school for the past two days has been filled with gossip about this game and the king choosing a bride and I just don't get why all this is necessary, he should just find himself a bride and not create this chaos.

Ava gave me an expensive necklace this morning as a birthday gift and I love it so much.

Told her it was too much but she waved it off telling me I deserved more. Am so grateful for having her as my best friend.

Being my turn to pick, I feel a bit nervous and I don't know why, I mean it's just a game and I don't even know what the point of it is. Besides, the rumours may not even be true and even if it is, how will this game choose a bride for the king?

Dragging my leg slowly to the box, I was immediately blindfolded. I dipped my hand into the box, touching a round small object, I picked it up and took it out from the box. Once the blindfold is off, I tilted my head down to see what I am holding, it's a golden orb.

The chancellor motioned her hand to the right signalling me to join those standing there, they were very much few compared to those on her left. I can see the fear and confusion in everyone's eyes except 'Ava' my best friend as I walked standing next to her.

She was already on the right side after she picked so I guess has a golden orb too.

"Why does it seem this whole thing is not affecting you but instead I see the happiness in your eyes?" I teased.

"Don't worry best friend, you will find out soo..., ooh wow your enemy is walking over to this side too" she said sarcastically, seeing anger flash in her eyes, I turn around to see the one having this effect on her, and behold the annoying bitch walking towards us. It's strange Ava is this angry, I haven't seen her react this way towards Aliya before.

Now I am sure there is something she's hiding. Since the announcement two days back, she's been all cold except this morning that she gave me the necklace and returned to her cold mood until just now I saw that genuine happiness in her eyes and then the anger again, only this time it was Aliya. What is she hiding?

Aliya walked closer to us before standing a few inches away. I scanned the room looking for her best and only friend and found her on the other side, too bad for her.

Bella has been the only one she's close to since I got here, she doesn't have friends and it makes me wonder why she hates me so much. Sad I always see those pain in her eyes and the walls she's built around herself. We both share that in common.

"Well! well," the chancellor's words snaps me back to reality.

"The game is over and was successful, the girls with the silver orb please drop them in the empty box" she continued after they did as instructed.

"The girls with the golden orb please reveal your orbs" she announced and we did. Glancing around, we are indeed few compared to those who picked the silver orbs. The chancellor continues.

"Please the girls who dropped their silver orbs should take their seats."
