Femi sat in the middle of his history course with a bored expression on his half-asleep face. As his black eyes gazed out the window of the Lecture Hall, he could faintly hear his Professor's monotone voice as it droned on about a course he was all too familiar with, he had failed the course since his Sophomore year.
A middle-aged man, clearly a Professor, from the way he appeared in the center of the Lecture Hall, which the teacher interacted with as he delved through the History Textbook to find the target of his interest until finally a picturesque appeared within the sight of everyone who was privy to this lecture. The moment these final year students, who were only a semester away from graduation, laid their eyes upon the pictures of six men and women of renown as they were called, they groaned in lament, knowing exactly what the Professor was about to tell them.
This did not deter the Professor who began his speech with a fit of passion, that was relatively unfamiliar to those in the audience.
"Who can tell me who this man right here is? Anyone? How about you Akube?"
Tokunbo sat upright, upon hearing the derogatory nickname that even his family referred to him as, before giving the answer that the Professor was looking for.
"Abiola…"
An unusual smile spread across the Professor's face, as he spoke with such awe and reverence in his voice that his students thought that perhaps the man in front of them was actually an imposter.
"Correct! his name is Abiola, can anyone tell me the reason for his significance?"
Despite everyone in the class knowing the answer, as this propaganda had been drilled in their heads since they were small children, nobody dared raised their hand, perhaps out interest in just what had gotten this old man so fired up for the first time since they had begun taking his courses four years ago.
Upon seeing that nobody wanted to answer the question, the teacher begun to explain the origins of the present state of the nation. Whether it was graphic violence caused by coups, or outright repressive rule from the corrupt politicians, the class witnessed the degradation of the country in the years leading up to the revolution. All while the professor summarized the content.
"The year is 1993, and the country and it had been progressing on a path of self-destruction. Everyone, no matter how foolish or malicious they may have been, were given political power, in the form of suffrage all in the name of inclusivity and freedom. This foolish idea had disastrous consequences as society had spiraled into degradation and conflict.
Now, I know this is hard to believe considering that we have all but eliminated these aspects from our society. But imagine if you will a world where you are forced to lock your doors at night. A world where you must keep arms in your home to protect yourself and your family from your neighbors.
Theft, murder, and banditry had become a daily aspect of living in Wazobia in the past half a century, and one did not know when they would become a victim of their fellow man. Lawlessness and death were widespread, to the point where even the death rate outpaced the birth rate.
Upon saying this last part, the professor shivered in visible dread, clearly finding the death and lawlessness in the land to be the most dreadful part of human history. He then continued to rant on about his lecture with the same fiery voice he used prior to this interruption.
"Needless to say, this type of social construct could not last long, and thus by the time the Soviet Union fell in 1991, the independence that our forefathers had fought for was on the verge of total collapse. In his infinite wisdom, the first Supreme Leader of the nation, made use of his charisma, political doggedness to persevere from the hunt and surveillance of the government to fight against the corruption and high-handedness triumph against the will of the then government and decay of the country.
Our founding fathers followed the Supreme Leader into the revolution and won the fight for the people. Which we refounded the nation we now know as Wazobia, but during those days, it was simply referred to as Nigeria In the following decades, our nation's economy, military and political standing has grown by building a society that could stand on it own to become a rising power among the nations. This is the history of the Nation called Wazobia.
