Chapter 9 - Survivor's Sanctuary

Aric's boots crunched against the sun-scorched earth as he and Su Jing traversed the desolate wasteland. The remnants of civilization loomed around them and sometimes, skeletal structures protruded from the cracked soil. The wind carried whispers of danger, rustling through the ruins and tugging at Aric's raven-black hair.

"Su Jing," Aric ventured, his eyes scanning their surroundings, "what exactly is Survivor's Sanctuary? You mentioned it before, but I don't think I fully grasped the concept."

Su Jing paused in her stride, her piercing blue eyes meeting his with an air of quiet determination. "Survivor's Sanctuary is one of the last bastions of humanity in this godforsaken world," she explained, her voice steady yet tinged with an unspoken weariness. "It's a massive, fortified city, built to withstand the ravages of time and the onslaught of monstrous creatures that roam the wastes. Its towering walls are said to be impenetrable, its gates guarded by a formidable force."

"Who built it?" Aric inquired, his curiosity piqued. "Where did they find the resources to create such a place?"

"Nobody knows for sure," Su Jing admitted, a shadow of uncertainty crossing her face. "The origins of the Sanctuary are shrouded in mystery. Some say it was a pre-existing metropolis, while others believe it was constructed by powerful beings or even gods. Regardless, it's become a haven for survivors, a place where order still exists amidst the chaos."

"Order?" Aric echoed, recalling the lawlessness he'd experienced since arriving in this strange new reality.

"Indeed," Su Jing confirmed, her gaze sharpening. "In the Sanctuary, rules and regulations govern every aspect of life. There's a strict hierarchy, with each citizen holding a specific rank based on their skills and contributions. Everyone has a role to play, and those who defy the system face severe consequences."

"Sounds rather oppressive," Aric mused, his thoughts drifting back to the rigid hierarchy of the magical society he'd left behind. "But I suppose it's necessary for survival."

"True," she agreed, her lips curving into a wry smile. "Without order, the Sanctuary would crumble under the weight of its own populace. It may be harsh at times, but it's the only way to keep thousands of desperate souls in check."

"Is there a ruling body?" Aric asked, intrigued by the concept of a mysterious sanctuary that could withstand the ravages of this post-apocalyptic world.

"Rumors say there is a council of sorts, composed of the most powerful and influential citizens," Su Jing replied, her eyes distant as if trying to recall lost knowledge. "But their identities remain a secret, and their decisions are often shrouded in mystery. Some even whisper of hidden forces pulling the strings from the shadows, though few dare to voice such thoughts openly."

Aric contemplated the enigma of Survivor's Sanctuary, his mind whirling with questions and possibilities. He sensed an underlying darkness in its origins, a foreboding presence lurking beneath the facade of stability and safety. But for now, it was the only hope they had, their best chance at finding answers and forging a new path in this unforgiving realm.

Together, they pressed onward, driven by determination and the shared desire to unravel the secrets of their shattered world. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the desolate landscape, Aric couldn't help but wonder what awaited them within the looming walls of Survivor's Sanctuary.

Finally, they reached the outer gates of Survivor's Sanctuary. Aric marveled at the towering walls that seemed to stretch on forever, a testament to the might and ingenuity of those who had built this fortress in the face of chaos and destruction.

"Remember what I told you about the rules and order here," Su Jing cautioned as they approached the entrance. "The people of Survivor's Sanctuary value their safety and stability more than anything else."

Aric nodded, taking in the imposing sight before him. They joined the queue of newcomers waiting to enter, and soon enough, it was their turn to face the gatekeeper.

"Entry fee is one small plasma core per person," the gatekeeper stated gruffly.

Su Jing handed over the required payment without hesitation, and Aric followed suit. With a nod, the gatekeeper allowed them to pass through the massive iron gates and into the city.

Though Su Jing's beauty was undeniable, none of the gatekeepers dared to take any liberties with her, as they too feared the strict enforcement of law and order. Something which would be practically unheard of at any other smaller settlement where people with power always did what they wanted

"Su Jing, if this place is so much better, why don't all humans just come here and live here? Won't it be much safer?" Aric questioned

"That would simply not be possible. The two plasma cores that we gave to enter the city, would be enough to live outside for more than half a month. This place is extremely expensive to the common man." Su Jing replied.

"If not for our harvest at the Bandit's hideout, even we would not be able to stay here for more than one day"

"Oh, I see." Aric nodded in understanding, all too familiar about living in poverty. The only reason why he was not homeless in his world was because of the dorm and meals provided by the academy

As they entered Survivor's Sanctuary, Aric's senses were immediately overwhelmed by the sights, sounds, and smells of a bustling metropolis. Towering high-rise buildings stretched towards the sky, constructed from a mix of salvaged materials and advanced technology that defied the desolation of the world beyond the walls. Steam billowed from pipes and chimneys, while neon signs flickered above storefronts, advertising everything from food and clothing to weapons and enchanted artifacts.

The roads teemed with people from all walks of life – merchants hawking their wares, families shopping for necessities, and adventurers seeking their next thrill. The air buzzed with energy, a stark contrast to the silence and emptiness of the wasteland they had left behind.

Aric took a deep breath, filling his lungs with the unfamiliar scents of a thriving city. He could sense the magic and power that coursed through the streets, a tangible force that seemed to pulse beneath his feet. As he walked alongside Su Jing, he couldn't help but feel a strange mixture of awe and trepidation.

"Welcome to Survivor's Sanctuary," Su Jing said, her voice tinged with both pride and sadness. "This is one of the last bastions of hope in a world gone mad."

Aric nodded, determined to make the most of this opportunity. He knew that within these walls lay the answers they sought, and the chance to forge a new future for themselves amid the ruins of their past. And so, hand in hand, they ventured forth into the heart of the sanctuary, ready to face whatever challenges awaited them in this brave new world.

As they navigated the bustling streets, Su Jing pointed out the uniformed guards stationed at various locations. Dressed in well-maintained armor and carrying an air of authority, they stood as a constant reminder of the strict law and order that governed Survivor's Sanctuary.

"See those guards?" Su Jing asked. "They're part of the reason why this place has remained relatively safe compared to the outside world. They enforce the rules without exception, and anyone who breaks them faces severe consequences."

Aric couldn't help but notice the wary looks on the faces of the passersby when they caught sight of the guards. It was clear that their presence was both a blessing and a curse – a necessary trade-off between freedom and security.

"Does it ever feel… oppressive?" Aric inquired, trying to wrap his head around the concept of such enforced order.

"Sometimes," Su Jing admitted. "But it's a small price to pay for the safety and stability it provides. Out there," she gestured towards the city gates, "it's every person for themselves. In here, we have a chance to build something better."

Aric mulled over her words as they continued their journey through the city, eventually arriving at the Settlement Mercenary Hall. The large, imposing structure was abuzz with activity, its entrance flanked by a diverse range of adventurers seeking missions and opportunities.

"Here we are," Su Jing announced as they stepped inside. "This is where you can register as a mercenary and gain access to various missions and tasks. Becoming a registered mercenary has its perks – you'll earn rewards for your work and gain certain privileges within Survivor's Sanctuary, like slight discounts at some establishments."

"Is it difficult to become a mercenary?" Aric asked, scanning the hall filled with battle-hardened individuals.

"Not particularly," Su Jing replied. "We'll need to fill out some forms and provide proof of your skills, but other than that, it's a fairly straightforward process. The real challenge lies in completing the missions you take on."

"Sounds like it could be a good way for me to hone my magical abilities," Aric pondered aloud, his determination growing.

"Exactly," Su Jing agreed, her eyes shining with pride. "In the past, I would never have thought of doing something like this due to the risks involved, but I feel that together we can be more successful. We can slowly expand our party with talent, and take up harder missions with more rewards"

Suddenly, Aric started picturing himself with a party of beautiful and mature girls. He had always envied popular kids in his academy, could this be his chance?

"No Men..." Aric muttered in a low voice.

"Sorry?" Su Jing asked as she did not hear Aric clearly

"Nothing, Let us go and register ourselves right away," Aric said in a louder voice, as he tugged at Su JIng's arms, dragging her towards the receptionist
