Chapter 36 - Show Yourself

The deafening roar of gunshots filled the room as the door swung open. Before the Sentry Secret Service agents could react, Alex took a series of precise headshots, catching them off guard. The intruders hadn't anticipated such a straightforward approach, nor the incredible accuracy of the shots. Several agents fell to the ground with bullets piercing their skulls, creating chaos and confusion.

It was only when Sentinel, their ace operative, burst into the room that the surviving agents snapped back to reality. They found themselves facing an unexpected and deadly foe. The enemies they faced this time were unlike the mutants they were accustomed to dealing with, and fear coursed through their veins.

Sentinel moved like a spider crawling, swiftly closing the gap between him and Max. As he approached, Max backpedaled and raised his pistol, aiming for Sentinel. A shot rang out, hitting Sentinel square in the chest, but the bullet merely ricocheted off, revealing the unknown and formidable material that composed Sentinel's body. The shot did little more than slow Sentinel down, and he resumed his charge.

With a three-pronged spear in his right hand, Sentinel lunged towards Max, aiming for a swift and deadly strike. A piercing sound accompanied the strike as the spear descended.

Psst!

Sentinel crashed to the ground, impaled from multiple angles, his body flickering several times before coming to a halt. However, it quickly became apparent that there was more than one Sentinel in their ranks, as another of them rushed forward, undeterred by their comrade's fate.

Max retreated rapidly, but the room seemed to have shrunk around him. With each step, he felt the cold, unyielding wall pressing against his back, leaving him with no room to escape.

Boom!

A sense of dread washed over Max as he realized he had reached a dead end. Sentinel, recognizing that Max had no way out, halted his advance, and the other Sentinels began to converge around him. They surrounded Max on all sides—front, sides, above his head, forming a tight ring. Several agents trained their guns on him, ready to fire.

Katie's eyes welled with tears, and she couldn't help but murmur an apology. No matter what Max had done, he was now trapped in this dire situation because of his attempt to save her.

Max gazed at Katie, a subtle smile gracing his lips. "I'm sorry, but I think it's a bit too early for that."

With those words, Max slowly released his grip on the gun, raised his left hand, and gently pressed it against the wall. Surrender seemed to be on his mind.

The Sentry Secret Service agents let out a collective sigh of relief, thinking Max was finally complying with their orders. Little did they know that the unexpected was about to occur.

Just as they hoped he would drop his unusual weapon, a door materialized behind Max. A door? How could there be a door there?

In bewilderment, the Sentry agents and Katie watched as Max smiled, seemingly unfazed by the dire circumstances. He entered the door and, with casual indifference, closed it behind him.

"A door? How is that possible?"

"What the hell just happened? How can there be a door there?"

"It must be his mutant ability! But why does he still have his ability?"

As the agents stared at the vanished door and the space where Max had stood moments ago, they opened fire, shooting a barrage of bullets into the now empty room.

Katie's eyes widened in shock. The questions raced through her mind. How could Max still possess his mutant ability? Who was he, and what other surprises did he have in store?

Suddenly, a deafening blast echoed through the room, and an agent crumpled to the ground in response.

"Where did that shot come from?"

The others scanned their surroundings in a reflexive search for the elusive marksman, but Max remained hidden, leaving no trace of his location.

"Boom!"

Another gunshot rang out, and blood sprayed as another agent met a grim fate, his eyes reflecting disbelief.

"Where is he?"

"This mutant, damn it! Where's he shooting from?"

"Show yourself, reveal your power!"

One agent shouted angrily, and in response, there was another gunshot.

Cold sweat trickled down their temples, and the agents of the Sentry Special Service huddled together, forming a defensive formation with no vulnerable spots, their unblinking eyes fixed on the ominous unknown.

The tension was suffocating, the terror profound.

Max had become a phantom assassin, an entirely invisible specter. His whereabouts were an enigma, and his next shot unpredictable.

The burden of invisibility weighed heavily on them.

Back to back, the Sentinel agents scuttled within the room, poised for Max's stealthy appearance and a potentially lethal strike. Outside the room, a multitude of soldiers and agents had assembled, ready to launch a surprise attack at a moment's notice. Jestner, the person in charge, refrained from hasty action, waiting for more information from the monitors.

"Have you identified him?"

Jestner inquired to a nearby subordinate.

"We're working on it. He's associated with the Sacred Gates, a professional mercenary. There's no prior record of his existence. He recently surfaced in Japan, protected by layers of ninja. He stealthily eliminated the leader of a ninja organization. He's also a mutant, suspected of having spatial manipulation abilities."

After a brief pause, the subordinate added, "The nine prisoners who disappeared during their escort were likely his doing."

"A mercenary with space-altering powers..." Jestner touched his bald head thoughtfully before entering the room.
