Knowing that Max had rescued the people, Lorna hurried back to assist John and the others. However, before she reached the Mutant placement center, the sound of gunfire echoed from the front. She saw John and Jenifer running toward her, accompanied by several Mutants in prison uniforms.
"Go!"
Lorna shouted, urging them to move quickly. With a roar, she signaled for them to leave, then used her power to deflect several bullets from the air before turning and following them.
They sprinted all the way to a prepared car and quickly drove away from the scene.
Back at the Mutant underground base, John and the others brought the rescued Mutants into the base, and Sonya immediately organized help for them.
"John!"
Jenifer suddenly grabbed John as he was about to leave.
John was visibly agitated. "Gus got captured. He was arrested during the mission. I had to return for these people first, but now... I can't leave him behind!"
"What happened?" Lorna inquired with a furrowed brow.
"The power system there was restored very quickly. There must be a backup system. When we were in the process of rescuing and escaping, the power came back on. That's how they found us. Gus had to go back in to provide cover for our escape. We were taking fire, and now I'm not sure if he got captured or..." The sage explained in a hushed tone.
Lorna nodded. "We will definitely rescue him, but even if we all go together now, we might not be able to save Gus. We might even end up getting more people caught. Max has already rescued the Mutants who were transferred. He should be here soon. We'll ask him to handle the rescue mission. You know, no matter how secure the place is, Max can handle it. So, don't worry. Just be prepared for serious injuries."
"He rescued them?" Jenifer asked in surprise.
John, recalling Max's abilities, also felt reassured.
He nodded, and John began organizing the Mutants they had rescued this time.
About an hour later, a door suddenly materialized in the hall.
All eyes turned toward it, and Max emerged from the door.
"Is it just you? Where are the people you rescued?" Lorna inquired, unable to hide her curiosity.
"I arranged them elsewhere. They have tracking devices on them. Bringing them here directly would be risky," Max replied with a smile. "I'll bring them to you after I finish dealing with things on my end."
Lorna nodded, satisfied with the explanation and impressed by Max's composure.
"If it were tracked here, it could cause trouble," she remarked.
"Max, I need your help to rescue someone," John said urgently, gripping Max's shoulders.
"Who do you need to save?" Max asked.
"Gus, he's my friend and comrade-in-arms. We conducted a raid to rescue some Mutants, but Gus got captured..." John explained with emotion. "I may not have money right now, but if you can rescue Gus, I promise I'll find a way to get you as much as you want!"
"Pulse?" Max inquired.
John nodded. "Yes, Gus is Pulse."
John nodded in response to Max's directive, his expression showing the urgency of the situation. It was evident that Pulse had been thrown into this mission soon after his arrival, and he was already fully engaged.
Max's first impression of Pulse was that he was no ordinary Mutant. In some universes, Pulse had been captured and forced to work for the nefarious Hound Project, a subsidiary of the Sentry Secret Service. This project aimed to brainwash and control Mutants, turning them into tools for capturing and eliminating other Mutants. Pulse's Ability had evolved from disrupting power systems to disrupting Mutant Abilities, making him a valuable asset to the Hound Project.
In certain comic universes, the Hound Project was responsible for the mass capture and elimination of Mutants, resulting in widespread devastation for Mutantkind. Max couldn't help but suspect that, in this world, many Mutants, aside from a few like Professor X and Magneto, might have fallen victim to the Hound Project, whether through capture, termination, or horrifying experiments.
The Mutant Placement Center had recently experienced a raid by John and his team, but it appeared that order had been somewhat restored, with additional personnel and heightened firepower. Max couldn't help but notice the presence of Sentry Secret Service agents.
"They're reacting quickly," John remarked, a hint of frustration in his voice. The posture of the Sentry Secret Service agents didn't seem to suggest they were merely gathering information; it appeared they were there to prevent John and his team from rescuing the prisoners.
With time ticking away, John and his fellow Mutants had to act swiftly to free the prisoners from the impending transport.
