"You seem to be bonding well with your new roommate,"
"If by bonding well you mean having fun throwing threats at each other, then yes."
We stood in the locker room, taking our stuff for gym class. It just so happened that he and I had lockers directly opposite each other; that was what led to our friendship. Taurus had caught sight of my collection of My Little Pony plushies, and sure he'd burst out laughing at first (though he said he wouldn't) when I had showed it to him, but then he borrowed Applejack and promised to take care of her. Hence a beautiful friendship.
So maybe at times, I have a sharp tongue, and I'm a bit careless and insolent, but when it comes to my toys and shows, I am very sensitive. That's why I didn't beat the crap out of Taurus when he laughed at me. It was definitely not because he seemed a foot taller than me, and was too good-looking in gym shorts. Nope.
"Loess. Haven't seen you in a while," Some guy with dark red hair said, appearing behind me out of nowhere.
"Yeah, we missed your ass, bro." Ace, with his everywhere piercings and that scar on his cheek which disappeared into his black hair.
I frowned, "Maybe if you a bit looked harder, you'd find me."
I didn't know exactly what these guys were playing at, but I really didn't want to be roped into something I didn't really want to be roped into.
"Looked harder at your ass?"
I mentally facepalmed.
"Dude," The redhead nudged Ace for his stupid comment.
"What? It's a nice ass,"
It could have been just me, but I felt a lot of eyes on my behind after that.
"Perverts," I shook my head at them, with a condescending frown on my face. "Shame on you."
Then snatching Taurus' jacket from the bench, I tied the arms around my waist, covering up.
I heard him snicker and raised an eyebrow at him, daring him to say what I knew he was thinking. He clears his throat awkwardly, a touch of red on his cheeks as he avoided my eyes and everyone else's. We were all looking at him now.
Then Coach suddenly barged in, "Okay, enough chitchat, everyone head to the gymnasium."
The lupine virus was something that plagued Citadel years ago. It is an infection that causes mutation of organisms into stronger, predatorial creatures. It was named lupine because most the common symptoms were features of wolves. But on some conditions, there may be bear mutants or even some birds.
The one bird mutant I've seen was unusually big, I heard all bird mutants are. Just think about it, wouldn't it be weird to see a pigeon the size of a wardrobe fly by?
But the virus didn't just give people powers and that's it. The mutation is normally incredibly painful. Very painful. So painful that people die from it. Not everyone's system can handle the infection, so since the plague many lives have been lost. So many, that in my gym class we were just 13 people. Only thirteen living, healthy mutants. It was kind of sad, when I think about it; how people just started dropping dead from choking on their own blood as their insides twisted or stretched and their organs shifted.
It was hard to detect the virus in a person back then, but now technology has done the job. No one has to even worry about the pain of mutation.
So now specific exercises are executed in schools for the surviving few. Mainly aiming at making it easier for us to shift between our two bodies.
Yes, I am a mutant. But tiny problem there... I don't know what I am.
I can change my hands, and ears and get a tail, even lengthen my canines, but nothing else. I can't shift beyond that, so it's hard for me to tell what creature I am.
There's also the heightened senses thing, my favorite. I just feel eerily omnipresent when I just use my senses. It's amazing, I mean I can see a ladybug on a tree metres away and I'm like what the fuck!
Honestly, I've come to love my abilities, even if I can't use them fully. Besides, even if I had awful grades (which I don't), the school wouldn't just sack me, so I can slack off just a teeny tiny bit.
I sat in the bleachers all through the class while the others tried to murder each other. Coach doesn't like calling me up because he thinks I'm 'fragile' or some shit.
Apparently, since I can't shift all the way, I can't fight either.
Even though it bugs me, I don't mind lazing around sometimes.
This time I had something thinking about. Someone. I just wondered what the hell he'd be doing right now...
*** later in the afternoon***
After my last class as I was packing up, someone tapped my shoulder. I looked up to see Ace and his redhead bestie again.
"What do you want?" I asked dryly.
He dramatically clears his throat, "I wanted to humbly apologize for my behavior earlier. It was offensive and rude, and I hope you can forgive me."
"Don't fret, chum. It's not your fault that I'm hot," I patted his shoulder and was about to walk away when he grabbed my arm.
"Party on Saturday night. I'll be expecting you, party animal,"
I pulled my arm out of his grip, "So that's why you apologized, I thought as much. Luckily for you, I can't resist. Now, sayonara. I gotta go." Quickly, I walked out of there, anxious of what I was going to meet when I got home.
